Programme of American music
CARDIFF Philharmonic Or- chestra will celebrate Inde- pendence Day in style with their spectacular American Night concert on July 4. For one night only it’s all about the Star-Spangled Ban- ner at the National Concert Hall of Wales with a showfea- turing the music of America’s best-loved composers. Impeccably conducted by Michael Bell, the orchestra starts with George Gersh- win’s Girl Crazy including classics such as Embraceable You and I Got Rhythm. Hot on its heels is the Sym- phonic Dances from West Side Story, which is one of the most dynamic and irresistible of American works. Likewise,
Barber’s Adagio for Strings is up there with the most beau- tiful pieces of music ever written, whilst Copland’s cowboy ballet Rodeo evokes sepia images of the old West. Plus, there will be a medley
of Glenn Miller hits includ- ing In the Mood, Moonlight Serenade and American Pa- trol, before Sousa’s Liberty Bell and Stars & Stripes For- ever bring the concert to a rousing conclusion. Live the American Dream
with Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra’s Independence Day showat St David’s Hall. Tickets cost £5, £8, £10, £16
and £22. To book, visit stda-
