NASA Awards Research Grants for Minority Serving Institutions

NASA's Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP) has selected 10 minority serving universities for cooperative agreement awards valued at almost $47 million.

Award recipients were selected from 76 proposals after a rigorous peer review by education and technical experts. Each university will receive as much as $1 million per year for a maximum of five years based on the availability of funds and satisfactory performance.

The selected universities are: · California State University, Los Angeles · Delaware State University, Dover · Hampton University, Hampton, Virginia · Langston University, Langston, Oklahoma · San Jose State University, San Jose, California · University of California, Merced · University of California, Riverside · University of Texas at El Paso · University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas · Xavier University of Louisiana, New Orleans

Awards were made through the 2014 Education Opportunities in NASA Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (EONS STEM) NASA research announcement for the establishment of MUREP Institutional Research Opportunity (MIRO) centers.

MIRO awards promote STEM literacy and enhance and sustain the capability of institutions to perform NASA-related research and education. The goals of the program are to expand the nation's base for aerospace research and development, increase participation by faculty and students at minority serving institutions, and increase the number of undergraduate and graduate degrees in NASA-related fields awarded to students from minority serving institutions.

Langley Federal Credit Union Donates $5,000 to Support Program for Seniors

• Around Hampton Roads

The Chesapeake City Council is seeking residents who may be interested in serving on various boards and commissions. Boards and commissions provide a vital service to various City departments, agencies and City Council.

Citizens wishing to serve must complete an application form. Applications are due in the City Clerk's office by July 1, 2015. City Council will appoint candidates for these vacancies at its July 28, 2015 meeting. No appointments are made during August or December.

Applications are currently being accepted for the following City Council appointed boards and commissions:

The ISCP was created after seeing the increased population of senior veterans in the area. Virginia has approximately 837,000 veterans. In Hampton Roads, every one in five persons is a veteran. Some even have served in WWII, yet are in need of programs and services to support their health and well-being. In addition, the respite provided by the program, allows the family caregiver an opportunity to preserve their health as well. The coalition of two local churches, CHCF and Langley FCU is a commitment to the Williamsburg community to enhance the quality of life for older adults, retirees and veterans. Portsmouth's Economic Development Will Be Under New Leadership

The City of Portsmouth's Department of Economic Development will be under new leadership. Mallory C. Kahler, Assistant Director, has been named Interim Director, coinciding with the departure of Charles E. "Chuck" Rigney as he returns to the city of Norfolk's Development Department as their new director.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Langley Federal Credit Union presented a check in the amount of $5,000 to the Colonial Heritage Community Foundation (CHCF) for support of their Innovative Senior Champions Program (ISCP). The donation allows the CHCF to continue the adult day services program and related services for the aging population in the Greater Williamsburg area. The ISCP includes areas such as art, music therapy, therapeutic gardening and health and wellness.

"I commend the CHCF for the support and programs they offer to seniors and their caregivers," said Langley Assistant Vice President and CHCF Board Member Ann Johnson. "The Innovative Senior Champions Program provides activities for seniors to stimulate their memories, creativity and increase their social skills while providing a much needed break for their caregivers. The seniors that have worked hard all of their lives now deserve to be taken care of in their later years."

Kahler is a Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) with over twenty-seven years of industry experience. She first joined Portsmouth in 1996 as Development Manager. She and seasoned colleagues - Toi M. Wilson, Business Development Manager; Lee Ogelby; Executive Assistant; and Betty Crummie, Administrative Coordinator -

continue the Department's facilitation of development projects and staffing the Economic Development Authority and Portsmouth Ports and Industrial Commission.
