ON TOUR: Collabro

LESS than a year after win- ning Britain’s Got Talent, Col- labro have announced dates for their second nationwide tour. The announcement of their 2016 Act Two tour tops off an astounding year for the band, which has seen them go global. This announcement coin- cides with the release of their second album Act Two on June 1, which comes less than a year after their debut album Stars stormed to the top of the charts. The tour will once again showcase their incred- ible vocal talent which wowed the judges and audience alike to see them crowned Britain’s Got Talent winners in 2014. Demand for the band since the showhas led to appearances all across Europe and Asia, while they have recently signed to Sony Masterworks in the USA, releasing their first US album. Act Two sees the band expand their musical horizons, record- ing some of the greatest songs that have influenced them as a band. The record includes some surprising re-interpre- tations of recent pop music’s finest moments such as Koda- line’s smash All I Want and Christina Perri’s A Thousand Years. There’s also a touching rendition of The Rembrandts’ world-famous I’ll Be There For You, which was debuted on the tour at the start of this year. THE Burning Hell is the alter-ego of Cana- dian songwriter Mathias Kom, and has been on the road in one form or another since 2007, playing everywhere from festivals to bars to living rooms – and once even a mental asylum in rural France. The band has garnered acclaim for their

hyperactive live shows and their caustic yet sincere lyrics, believing as they do that songs about the inevitability of death can also be fun to dance to. On occasion, Mathias and clarinetist Ariel Sharratt also go on the road as a duo, but more of- ten they’re joined by bassist Nick Ferrio, drummer Jake Nicoll and guitarist Darren Browne. The band play The Full Moon in Cardiff on June 18 but recently took time out to discuss their music.

What’s with the name of your band? It comes from a religious pamphlet I

was handed on the street in Toronto in the year 2000. I was doing some home- recording and I needed a name for the project; The Burning Hell seemed to fit, and it stuck.

Where are you based? Two of us live on Prince Edward Island,

two in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and one in Peterborough, Ontario.

Why did you start playing the ukulele? Because it was small, cheap, and easy.

Why did you stop playing the ukulele? I didn’t, I just stopped playing ukulele

on tour. I’ve always played both guitar and ukulele on our recordings, but on tour between 2007 and 2012 I almost al- ways used only my baritone uke. Since 2013, however, I decided that I needed a change. Maybe one day I’ll go back. Life is a highway.

How many people are in The Burning Hell? Five – Mathias, Ariel, Darren, Nick, and

Jake. CARDIFF SHOW: The Burning Hell

But I heard that sometimes the band can have forty-five members or some- thing. What’s up with that? In the past, the lineup has expanded

and contracted from tour to tour. But since 2012, it’s been just the five of us. It’s true that sometimes we’ll have former members join us on stage when we’re in a particular town, and you can see a mostly complete list of all the people that have

BRITAIN’S best-loved rockers Status Quo will undertake the 11-date Accept No Substitute UK Winter tour in Novem- ber/December 2015. This tour will see the band returning to their fully electric set up after the huge success of the Aquostic (Stripped Bare) and Aquostic! Live At The Round- house albums [the former just passed 150K sales] and tour. Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt,

Andy Bown, John ‘Rhino’ Ed- wards and LeonCave will plug back in and bring their thun- derous electric live showback to the nation’s venues. Packed with hits, both new and old, taken from that unbelievable back catalogue, this is a series of dates not to be missed; not

least as support at all the De- cember shows will come from Wilko Johnson. Francis Rossi said, “We’ve

had such a blast with the Aquostic style, but for this tour we are going back to the sound that defines us. I read in the paper that we were breaking up; but we’re not finished yet I can tell you!” Rick Parfitt added, “I guess the name of the tour speaks for itself, but this is full-throt- tle no-nonsense Status Quo”. Catch Status Quo at Car-

diff’s Motorpoint Arena on December 8. Tickets from livenation. co.uk or ticketmaster.co.uk.

Is it true that The Burning Hell holds a world record? In 2012, we played 10 concerts in 10 countries in 24 hours, which is still the most anyone has done as far as we know. But Guinness won’t recognize it officially because of some stupid rule they have

about needing to take a commercial flight as part of your attempt. We still did it, though, and that’s what counts.

How many albums do you have? We’ve released six full-length albums:

Tick Tock (2007), Happy Birthday (2008), Baby (2009), This Charmed Life (2010), Flux Capacitor (2011), and People (2013). There are also plenty of EPs.
