after a couple seasons, rubber mulch will gener- ally maintain all or the majority of its colour after a decade’s time, and doesn’t rot (consequently, it doesn’t need to be replaced). Rubber mulch is also heavier, so it doesn’t

blow around in the wind as much, and keeps better contained than cedar mulch. If you’re worried about inviting that “old tire

smell” into your garden, you needn’t. The floral fragrance of your garden will far outweigh any hint of rubber in the backyard; odour is minimal to non-existent. Public gardens and businesses in particular are

jumping on the recycled-resource bandwagon, as it is not only sustainable, but whittles down the labour needed for upkeep. Other rubber products

If you fall in love with the low-fuss of your

rubber mulch, other products made with the same recycled tire can create pathways for your garden, pool pads, and even driveways. Rubber sidewalk blocks and stepping stones are moulded from recycled tire; and full paving is even avail- able with the resource. The product’s ease is extended to its low-main-

tenance installation: when you have your drive- way paved with rubber, it doesn’t require excava- tion, and because it’s a relatively light product, doesn’t require heavy equipment to haul. The whole project can be completed in a day’s work. The same goes for a pathway or pool pad; the project won’t tie up your yard for days on end. A recycled tire product has perks in our four- season climate, as well.

It accommodates all

weather by expanding and contracting, so it won’t crack during seasonal change or as the ground naturally shifts. Rubber is one of the safest options for winter, as its grippy texture and functional drainage ensures a smooth, non- slippery surface for walking and driving. Because of its malleability and flexibility,

rubber can accommodate uneven surfaces and leave behind a clean finish. It can even be placed over unsightly or damaged existing concrete or asphalt while allowing for a seamless look. Upkeep

Maintaining your rubber surfaces is easy, and

comparable to any pavement. You can either sweep the surface with a broom or pressure-wash it clean. While rubber products promote sustainability

by repurposing old materials, they also ensure you won’t create more waste by replacing them down the road. Rubber paving is durable, and doesn’t peel or crack, but any damages to the rubber can be easily repaired by the installer (and most have warranty protection). And while many

times

friendly products on the market are pricier, rubber paving in lieu of redoing a whole concrete drive is more cost-effective. Plot your revenge on those ugly tires stacked

up in backlanes and landfills, and create the yard of your dreams. q
