8TH ANNUAL DON THOMPSON FILM FESTIVAL The running group, L.A. Frontrunners, started the Don Thompson Film Festival eight years ago as


a scholarship fundraiser in conjunction with the USC Lambda LGBT Alumni Association. The event, taking place onSaturday, April 11 at the Ray Stark Family Theatre in the USC School of Cinematic Arts Complex at the University Park Campus in Los Angeles, is a celebration of up-and-coming LGBT and Ally filmmakers. The Don Thompson LGBT Film Festival (DTFF) showcases short films in all genres by USC students and alumni filmmakers committed to exploring the diversity of LGBT life and culture. USC Lambda is proud that the event has now become one of the organization’s signature events, with proceeds going to benefit the Don Thompson Scholarship in Cinematic Arts. AWARENESS DAY National Youth HIV AIDS Awareness Day is


on Friday, April 10. In observance, onSunday, April 12, The Lula Washington Dance Theatre at 3773 Crenshaw Boulevard is presenting a compilation of performances centered on the HIV and AIDS epidemic and its transforma- tions, from the disease’s early stages to where it is at present. The primary focus of the event is on youth, ages 13 to 25 and is designed spe- cifically to raise awareness and to educate, by presenting topical information in unique and innovative ways. SISTER SPIT NEXT GENERATION Michelle Tea and Sini Anderson established


Sister Spit in San Francisco in the early 1990s, as a weekly, all-female open mic series. Since its inception, it has crossed the country many times, re-emerging as Sister Spit Next Generation in 2007, featuring established writers with young, emerging queer and queer-influenced artists of all genders. The Center Long Beach, for the fourth year in a row, is proud to host the queer spoken word showcase, again for free, on Friday, April 3! This year features columnist Thomas Page McBee, author Myrian Gurba, as well as Mica Sigourney, creator of drag persona, VivvyAnne ForeverMORE, artist and writer, Tom Cho, writer Kate Schatz, visual artist and teacher Miriam Klein Stahl, local artist Griselda Suarez and host Virgie Tovar, the Latina femme writer and activist. Archival materials include the Transgender Pride Flag and a video interview of flag designer, Monica Helms, along with a video album of Reed Erickson, ONE’s early eccentric benefactor, as well as, print ephemera of Sir Lady Java, the legendary nightclub performer and activist.
