KEY QUICK TIPS TO SUMMERIZE YOUR RV

A few tips from the RV Service Technician training instructors at Okanagan College

It’s time to dust off the cobwebs and get your RV ready for another season of relaxation and exploration. It should be more than just hooking up and going off to your favourite destination. When an RV is put away for the winter, systems have been drained, RV antifreeze has been added, batteries have been disconnected, and covers may have been installed. All of these winterizing activities need to be reversed before the RV is ready for the season.

If you installed RV antifreeze in your water system, just add water to your fresh tank and use your pump to flush it out. Start at the farthest hot water tap and work your way through each tap until clear water is flowing. Don’t forget to hook up your city water connection and run some water through it as well. This line may be quite long and needs to be purged of antifreeze as well. Now access and open your hot water heater bypass valve or valves. Make sure the drain plug is removed and allow fresh water to run, flushing out any stale water or mineral build-up in the bottom of the hot water tank. Once clear water is flowing out the drain opening, stop the flow and install the drain plug.

Turn the pump on and open a hot water tap. Let the water flow until no more air comes spitting out of the tap.

Many people don’t use their RV potable water system for drinking water, however if you do it is recommended to sanitize the complete system before you begin the season. Stop into your local RV parts store and pick up an RV water sanitization product and follow the instructions.

Your water system is now ready for use.

Before starting any appliance get out the air compressor and blow out the burners. After you blow out the fridge burner, blow upwards to get any debris out of the back of the fridge. As for the furnace, just blow out the vents on the side. Don’t forget to blow out the hot water tank as well. Bugs love the smell of propane so will make nests in the burners.

Repack your bearings, test your lights and brakes, clean your battery connections, check your roof seals and go have some fun.
