Relive it all just for day
BACK in the 1980s, the Square Club in Cardiff was a haven for punks, goths, new romantics, indie kids and psychobillies. Square Club regular Tracy Goode, originally from Fleur de Lis, but now living in Cardiff, is paying homage to the glory days with a fundraising event for Velindre Cancer Centre. Ms Goode has roped in one of
the Square Club’s original DJs, Stephen Johnson, to return to the decks for the When We Were Heroes event, with the name in- spired by David Bowie’s song Heroes. Both are members of Velindre’s Trek Patagonia 150 team. When We Were Heroes: Square Club Reunion is on Saturday, March 21, The Moon Club, Womanby Street, Cardiff, from 8pm until late. Admission is £7, with all the money raised going to Velindre Cancer Cen- tre.

ROCKERS: Purple are back to entertain in the UK
TEXAN trio Purple make a welcome return to these shores for a run of shows includ- ing Bristol Louisiana on March 29 alongside Demob Happy. Having cemented their live reputation
on their inaugural visit late last year, the band follow a series of European dates with their first UK shows of 2015 in sup- port of forthcoming single DMT. Bookended by recent single, Wallflower,
and new single DMT, the band’s debut long player, 409, picked up plenty of thumbs up on it’s release last year, not least a 5K review in Kerrang and plenty of plus points in lieu of their live shows. DMT, a live favourite, features vocalist/ drummer Hanna Brewer full throttle ahead blitzing through all six minutes of riotous wig out aided and abetted in no small part by fellow thrill-seekers, bassist Joe Can- nariato and guitarist Taylor Busby.
AndyHowells chats toHanna fromTexan rockers Purple about their forthcoming Bristol show
Andy Howells recently put questions to Hanna from the band ...
Who are you and how did you come together? We are Purple and we ended up togeth-
er because I (Hanna) saw Taylor’s raggae band play and asked him to jam with me. I messaged him on myspace and he ended up coming to my jam room and we just wrote and recorded material and then later we got a bass player.
Where are you from? We are from Beaumont Texas.
How would you describe your music style? I would describe it as punk and wild.
But we can still get down to earth and real.
What’s been your best live experience? When we played a sold-out show in Ber-
lin with The Subways and Kill it Kid. We killed that show.
THE DERELLAS have been de- scribed as a cocktail of glam with some sleazy New York Dolls style punk thrown in. The London-based rockers,
who cite the likes of other punk masters like The Ramones, The Damned and The Clash as big influences, are bringing their stomping show to South Wales for the first time when they play the Dolls House in Abertillery on March 28. The DeRellas are Robbie Tart
(ex-Vibrators) – voice and Guitar, Luca Comencini – Guitar, Timmy DeRella – bass and Seb Frey on drums. Formed in 2007, they continue
to build a solid international fan- base and are powerful live per- formers. If you’re willing to leave your
pretentions at the door, then set- tle in for a set of no-nonsense pop-punk that you can pogo up and down to.
Punks not dead, it’s glam Interview
The band is undertaking a UK
and European tour promoting their New Single Rock n Roller Coaster, taken from their new al- bum Slam! Bam! The album consists of eleven new band songs and also a cover of the Ronettes Be My Baby, sung in The DeRellas style, of course. With a cheeky wink to 70s glam
rock and the band’s razor-sharp punk attitude, the LP has been enthusiastically received by re- viewers and fans alike, building on their acclaimed debut album Hollywood Monsters. Andrew Rogers, of the Dolls
House, said: “Securing The DeRellas for their first show in South Wales is great for us and I’m sure they won’t be disap- pointed with the welcome they’ll receive.
What are you working on at the moment? We are on tour with The Subways and
Dune Rats. And also writing new tunes for our second album. I’m so stoked about these new songs. I think it’s better than the first album.
Where can we see you live? We have been playing a lot in the UK
and Europe. You can catch us at Bristol Louisiana on March 29.

TRIBUTE: The Johnny Cash Roadshow

“Completing the evening’s
line-up will be Facefish, The Setbacks and Not Since The Accident so I suggest that peo- ple get here early. “It’s brilliant to see that that
the reputation of the Dolls House as a key venue is spreading. We are increasingly attracting bands from across the UK and Europe and are de- termined to build on this”. Timmy DeRella answered questions about the band. Where is the band from? The DeRellas are a London
band and we always will be. You funded Slam! Bam! via PledgeMusic. Do you think that this type of approach creates a closer relationship with fans? Yeah, Pledge was a great way
to put out our album. It cuts out all the record company rub- bish. Fans of the band like to be part of what you are doing,
DOLL HOUSE DATE: The DeRellas
that’s what punk rock is all about. What can people expect from your show if we haven’t caught it live before? A good time and pure show biz.
Your tour already includes some shows in Europe in May. Are you looking at other overseas shows? We are planning gigs in Germa- ny and The Netherlands.
There is also talk of playing New
York with The Fleshtones. What’s been your best live expe- rience? Every time we hit the stage is the
best time. The here and now. Any other projects in the pipe- line at the moment? We have our ep out in April and
then we’re back in the studio later in the year recording for a single.
