will publish a proposal for the regulation of unmanned drone aircraſt at the end of the year as part of the aviation package being draſted by the Transport Commission, DG MOVE. Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc said she would strike a balance between security, safety, privacy and nuisance, but without over-regulation.


US Congressmen Brad Sherman and Tom Rooney have created a Cargo Airship Caucus in the House of Representatives to encourage their development for military and civilian use. Airships currently under development have the potential to carry large payloads over long distances, at a fraction of the cost of fixed-wing aircraſt, and can reach some of the most remote locations in the world, they say. Airships also require far less ground infrastructure and can land cargoes much closer to final destination.


Panalpina is to operate a wet-leased 747-8F freighter on its transatlantic route, which includes calls in Mexico and the UK. It comes as part of a new five-year agreement with Atlas Air, under which Panalpina will switch one of its wet-leased aircraſt to more than 200 scheduled charters per year, allowing it to expand its air freight network.


Emirates SkyCargo has launched a weekly freighter service from its Dubai hub to Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso. It will be operated by a Boeing 777 freighter aircraſt on a Dubai-Ouagadougou-Dakar- Frankfurt-Dubai rotation, and is capable of carrying over 100 tons of cargo.


Freight forwarder and logistics company Norbert Dentressangle has extended its Hong Kong to Paris service to include three airfreight consolidations per week into the UK. It has secured block space agreements with a number of airlines. Transit time is two days to Heathrow and Manchester. The company also offers a daily trucking service from Southern China to its consolidation facility in Hong Kong, along with onward transportation of consignments on arrival into the UK. Norbert Dentressangle also offers a weekly LCL ocean freight service from Hong Kong to the UK.


Network Aviation Group has added a fourth MD-11 freighter service per week between Nairobi, Kenya and London Stansted. The new service will depart Nairobi on Friday.


DHL is investing €114 million in its hub at Brussels Airport, originally opened in 1985. The scheme will triple capacity from 12,000 to 39,500 shipments per hour with modern sorting technology and is expected to create 200 new jobs by 2020. The original Brussels facility was set up in 1985 as a regional hub but is now being increasingly being used as an international and transit centre, and is nearing maximum capacity.


DHL Express is to build a new South Asia Hub at Singapore’s Changi Airport. The S$140m investment is due for completion by the first quarter of 2016 and will triple capacity to 14,000 shipments per hour, compared with 2,400 for the existing terminal.


Bram Graeber has been appointed temporary executive vice president of Air France KLM Cargo, following the departure of Erik Varwijk. He will combine the post with his current duties at the head of Transavia, the leisure airline within the Air France KLM Group. Graeber held senior positions at KLM Cargo between 2003 and 2007.


Virgin Atlantic Cargo’s Steve Hughes is to move from regional vice president sales for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) to the newly-created post of vice president sales Transatlantic. He will also develop Virgin Atlantic’s transatlantic joint venture with Delta Air Lines. In Hong Kong, Neil Vernon becomes vice president sales international, a role that includes his current Asia and Australasia focus and is now extended to include sales in Dubai, Nigeria and South Africa.

European Supply Chain Day planning underway


Plans are being laid for the second European Supply Chain Day, says the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). The event, on 16 April, promotes and raises awareness of opportunities in the logistics profession, throughout Europe. CILT chief executive Steve Agg said it would be “an ideal opportunity


to raise the profile of our profession. With the increasing demands being placed on our industry and our consequent need to fulfil new positions, it is important that we make the most of this opportunity to raise awareness of the career opportunities available to all in logistics.” The CILT is the primary contact for all events taking place in the UK.


17 Bill Acres has been appointed “champion” for the day’s activities in
