The three largest holidays in Japan are New Year’s, Obon, and Golden Week. This month, learn more about Golden Week, four national holidays in a seven day period, starting at the end of April.
THE HOLIDAYS SHOWA DAY
Wednesday, 29 April This is the birthday of the former Emperor Showa, who reigned from 1926 - 1989. The purpose of the holiday is to reflect on his 63 year reign.
CONSTITUTION DAY
Sunday, 3 May In 1974, the new postwar constitution went into effect on this day.
GREENERY DAY
Monday, 4 May Greenery Day was celebrated on 29 April until 2006. This day is dedicated to appreciating the environment, because Emperor Showa loved plants and nature.
