Unlicensed boat owners are fined
TWO men have been ordered to pay a combined amount of more than £1,150 for having their boats on the River Medway without valid registrations. Gordon Marshall, of College Av-
enue, Maidstone pleaded guilty at Maidstone Magistrates Court and was fined £115 with costs of £115, a compensation order of £291 and victim surcharge of £20 as his ves- sel Carleys Pridewas used without a valid licence. The vessel was seen on the river
at the rear of CollegeAvenue with- out a valid registration displayed. Environment Agency records
showedMrMarshall had submitted his registration application but had failed to provide payment or a com- pliant boat safety certificate. A reminder was sent to Mr Mar-
shall in July 2014 but no registration or feeswere received. Lyndsay Beadle, from Gilling-
ham, also pleaded guilty and was fined £135 with costs of £115, a com-
pensation order of £340 and victim surcharge of £20 after failing to apply for a boat registration. His vessel Fortuna was seen at The Riverside Moorings, upstream of Allington Lock, in June last year, without a valid registration certifi- cate. Mr Beadle was informed he needed to comply with the Envi- ronmentAgency’s boat registration requirements, but failed to do so. Rebecca Cox, Environment Agency waterways officer said: “The revenue we receive from ves- sel licensing is essential.Without it, we are unable to complete mainte- nance such as lock repairs and dredging, and providing facilities like moorings, toilets and showers. “By not complying, the revenue is
lost, threatening the future of this greatwaterway.” The Environment Agency carries
out regular patrols on the River Medway, so owners of boats not displaying valid registration plates could face prosecution.

Adrian Clee of the Salvation Army and Derrick Law, of Keemlaw, put together the kitchen starter packs
Starter packs for ‘new lives’
THE first batch of kitchen equipment donated under a “kitchen amnesty” has been delivered to the Salvation Army. Keemlaw, which owns Catering Complements in Maidstone’s Market Buildings, collected the second-hand kitchen items, allowing customers to benefit from a part exchange value on their unwanted items against a new purchase. The Salvation Army is using the items to put together home starter
packs, providing basic kitchen equipment for those starting a new life. The kitchen packs are customised to suit the needs of the recipients. Derrick Law, director of Keemlaw, said: “Don’t throw away your old
things, if they are in good condition, we will part-exchange them.” Keemlaw is offering a part exchange value on unwanted tableware, glasses, utensils, pots, pans or bakeware.
Hospice store seeks new premises
THE Heart of Kent Hospice has closed its flagship store in Maidstone after 20 years in business. The charity said it recognises the thousands of pounds raised by
the shop and café at Starnes Court and by its volunteers, but it was, sadly no longer making any money. A spokesman for the hospice said: “We have made the reluctant decision to close the shop and relocate to amore central area of Maid- stone. We appreciate how disappointing this is for our staff, volun- teers and customers. We applaud their commitment and loyalty and look forward to welcoming both volunteers and customers to our new Maidstone shop.” Aswewent to press, the hospicewas still looking for premises.
