6 5 4 1 Farming in Clevedon W 2 3

hen looking through some old

photographs of Clevedon I saw a postcard of cattle grazing on Wains Hill. This was dated 1926. These cattle belonged to a family called Priston. The grazing on the hill was left to farmers and the proceeds donated to the poor of the town.

In days gone by there were a number of farms within the town and surrounding area which have mostly disappeared under housing developments. These farms would have kept milking cows and in earlier times the milk would have been sold raw, door to door, by individual farmers.

My father used to tell me about farms in the town and I can remember as a boy buying calves with father off farms which no longer exist. There was a farm on Strawberry Hill which kept Guernsey cows and the young family farmed what is now Clevedon Golf course and also kept Guernseys there. Ken Williams and his father had a farm in Old Street and there was a farm where Highdale School now stands. Hill View Farm was

where Yeo Moor School playing fields are. The farm cottage (Hill View Cottage) still remains and the cow sheds were where the new houses have been built.

The Tinklin family had a dairy in Old Church Road selling their own diary products and groceries. This was on the opposite side of the road from their farm, Salisbury Farm. This farm was demolished in the 60’s and built over.

Tutton Farm was where Central Way now runs and is recognised by Tutton Way. The Baker family farmed what was originally Wrangle Farm, later changed to Triangle Farm. This Farm was where the motorway slip road now stands. Court Farm and East End Farm are still farmed. Coming back along the ring road towards West End the road slices through what was once Crab Apple Farm which gives its name to the pub. In earlier years there would have been many more small farms owned by Clevedon Court and let to local tenants.
