January 2015 MAINE COASTAL NEWS Page 9. Waterfront News Historic Ship MAYFLOWER II Arrives at Mystic Seaport

MYSTIC, CT—The historic ship May- fl ower II arrived at Mystic Seaport today after being towed from Plymouth, MA. The journey was made so the ship could under- go a restoration in the Museum’s Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard.

Restoration work will begin this month,

honoring Mayfl ower II‘s original construc- tion and using traditional methods with the goal of restoring the ship to her original state when she fi rst arrived to Plymouth in 1957. Inspections in 2013 revealed that Mayfl ower II is in need of a major refi t, which is nor- mal for a 57-year-old wooden ship. Plimoth Plantation recently completed some major repairs to secure a safe condition for the ship to continue operations on the Plymouth wa- terfront. These efforts were the initial steps

toward addressing the long-term restoration plan which will follow three phases: survey, document, and restore. A comprehensive marine survey will be completed by Paul Haley of Capt. G.W. Full & Associates, the same fi rm that sur- veyed several vintage vessels including the Charles W. Morgan, the USS Constitution, and the USS Constellation. Stone and iron ballast will be completely removed for the fi rst time since the ship’s construction to al- low proper inspection of the bilge area. The scope and plan for this winter’s restoration work will largely be determined by the needs identifi ed once the ship is out of the water and the ballast is removed.

Throughout the restoration the public will have the opportunity to view the ship

MMA Earns Accrediation of Online Master's Program in International Logistics Management

CASTINE—Maine Maritime Academy President William J. Brennan announced today that the college’s online Master of Science in International Logistics Manage- ment has achieved full accreditation status through the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). It is the fi rst accreditation of an online degree pro- gram for Maine Maritime Academy and the Loeb-Sullivan School.

“External validation is a critical achievement for our online graduate logis- tics program,” said Vice President for Aca- demic Affairs, David Gardner, Ph.D. “Our students are working professionals whose employers will often reimburse tuition costs only for an accredited program.”

Associate Dean of the Loeb-Sullivan School of International Business and Lo- gistics, Donald Maier, Ph.D., added, “This is a perfect program for working people, and the only program of its kind in the Northeast. We’re currently serving students from Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Texas, and we have a Turkish student enrolled who is working in Brazil,” he said. “Since trade is global, delivering our curriculum to students wherever they’re working is essential, and accreditation better positions our program among others worldwide.” The accreditation review took about one year to complete, and included

during the Museum’s operating hours, and the plan is to permit people to board the ship on land beginning February 14, 2015. If repairs go as planned, Mayfl ower II is expected to return to Plymouth in May, 2015. The restoration of the 57-year-old wooden ship will be carried out over sev- eral years with the ship spending winter and spring at Mystic Seaport and returning to Plymouth each summer and fall. The project is scheduled for completion prior to 2020–the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ arrival.
