ISSUE 54 – WINTER 2015 CITY®

City Security – The magazine that promotes security issues nationwide

We must remember the lessons of the past when planning for the future

s we come to the end 2014 with its many events commemorating the First World War, including the spectacular and moving display of poppies at the Tower of

London (as shown on our cover, with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth), we have reflected on the devastating impact of war. With conflict a persistent theme around the world, an increased threat level in the UK and continuing economic pressures, what does this mean for those responsible for security?

We have asked a number of security thought leaders for their views on where they see the threats in 2015 and the priorities for those responding. Adrian Leppard, Commissioner of City of London Police, Paul Crowther, Chief Constable of British Transport Police, and Iain Livingstone, Deputy Chief Constable of Police Scotland, provide an interesting insight into the police approach. Additionally, Sir David Veness and senior figures from major security suppliers provide their views. Continuing on the theme of looking ahead, Contest Global examine what global terrorism will look like in 2015.

In an effort to share good practice and ideas for responding to this increased security threat, we have a range of articles from experts in the field: Canary Wharf discuss how they reviewed and updated their security; we include an interesting feature on gait recognition, which explains an alternative way to identify individuals; we have a report on the review of CONTEST, the UK Counter Terrorism strategy, provided by Charles Farr at a recent seminar. We also include an insight into how the responsible authorities come together in London to plan for and respond to emergencies.

This year has seen the growth of City Security magazine with up to 9,000 copies distributed free nationwide. This represents a 40% increase from our national launch 18 months ago. The magazines are available at both Gatwick and Heathrow airports (if you go business class). With demand for copies overseas, we plan to launch a digital version in 2015, bringing the magazine to an even wider audience.

In our spring issue, out in March 2015, the theme will be Counter Terrorism and this coincides with CT Expo where we are media partners.

Wishing you and your families a peaceful and happy festive holiday season. Eugene O’Mahony Editor
