A SIXTH form student from Sutton Valence School has been awarded a scholarship to the RoyalWelsh Col- lege of Music and Drama. Ioana Pupaza (pictured) joined the
school in 2013 as one of six Romani- ans to win a scholarship to study in the UK. She said: “My
dream was to study the violin in a British con- servatoire. Now that I have achieved this I
am very thankful for all the help I have received from teachers at Sut- ton Valence and for the opportuni- ties the school has given me.” Headmaster Bruce Grindlay said:
“Along with the school’s other ac- complished violinists, Ioana re-
ceived termly lessons with Nicholas Miller, professor of violin at the Royal Academy of Music. She also performed in a number of master- classes, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician.” Ioana has led senior strings and
has formed a piano trio at the school. She is preparing to perform a con- certo movement with the chamber orchestra later in the year. She said: “I am tremendously ho- noured to have won a scholarship and I cannot wait for my course to start in September." The RoyalWelsh College of Music
and Drama – the National Conser- vatoire ofWales – competes along- side an international peer group of conservatoires and specialist arts col- leges for the best students globally. Alumni include actor Sir Anthony Hopkins and comedian Rob Brydon.
