be a yes or no on benefits,’” recalled Hostetler. “Peter- mann said, ‘Certainly they’re our employees, but we’re going to match what you’re doing and take care of your people because that’s important to us.’” Voíla; a five-year contract signed, sealed and delivered. And from a management standpoint, Hostetler
added, it made sense for Tallmadge to bring Peter- mann aboard, not only from a cash flow perspective on the capital costs of the buses, but the experience the company offers in bus routing and student pick- up and delivery and all parts of transportation. Te result, while not yet quantifiable due to the length of the contract and no real desire to crunch the numbers quite yet, is sure to be big cost savings. “I’ve got to believe we’re going to save money, how
much I’m not sure, but that’s because they’re taking care of our employees and they’re happy and they’re handling all the issues that go along with that from regular routes to field trips,” he added. “If we were to continue on and not save any money it would still be worth it for us.” Despite expanding beyond its Ohio home, Settle said the company’s recent expansion is made possi-
ble by its unique way of doing business. He said many conversion opportunities require greater flexibil- ity and hands-on involvement, for which most large corporations aren’t structured, one reason why an increase in conversions never materialized despite be- ing forecasted a year ago in response to the economy. “Conversions have always been a key component
of our growth since our inception and continue to be core to our mission,” he added. One thing’s for sure, it’s a way of doing business that
definitely agrees with new clients like Tallmadge CSD. “Te way they care about the employees and about you as a district/client comes
through in
everything they do. Some folks are motivated by money, and certainly you have to make money to stay in business,” Hostetler said. “But I get the real sense they’re motivated by serving people and tak- ing care of needs. I’m just impressed by what they are and what they represent.” ■
