With Stewart Day’s acquisition of the club

has come heightened commitment to investing in the tools man enough to do the job Michael is managing. A more powerful, 50hp New Holland tractor, part-exchanged for their old TC27 to run alongside the existing 2335; the newly launched Trimax Snake rotary mower, earmarked for the training grounds and three, 34in Dennis walk-behind mowers for Gigg Lane are all bringing Bury’s machinery fleet up to the mark, supplied by Campey Turf Care. Michael and his two assistants, Andy

Bateman, at the club since 1992, and Michael Warburton, continue to use the VertiDrain 7316 across the grounds, along with other aeration machinery such as a

1.6m Shockwave and Air 2G2 self-propelled air injector, plus a Landquip sprayer and Bobcat mini excavator for general duties. To maximise return, the turfcare team put their fleet to good use, running a “mini business within a business” by hiring them out to local grassroots clubs. The departure of FC United of Manchester, and the end to staging rugby league at Gigg Lane is a relief for Michael, but he will still have to contend with holding concerts and boxing at the ground going forward under Stewart Day’s vision of the site as a sport and leisure venue. The best laid plans though can come

unstuck by forces of nature that are often hard to predict or control, and we’re not

talking about the notoriously wet Manchester weather. “We have a dog fox that visits us often on a Saturday night after a match,” Michael explains. “He can jump over an 8ft wall and likes to dig up every one of our eight sprinklers in his search for water. He fathered three cubs last year. I’m still searching for the right solution to put an end to his activities.”

As Ben Chappelow concludes: “We’ve done our bit to push-start the club into what, we hope, will be greater success and the potential for promotion this season. We wish them the best of luck with their endeavours.”
