Help for beginners: join a local hort society

T

he Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA) has 279 societies across On- tario. Joining your local society is a

good way to meet others interested in gar- dening and learn more about plants, com- posting, growing vegetables and more. A yearbook of the upcoming meetings

and activities, newsletters throughout the year, excellent speakers, possible outings and gatherings for pot lucks, plant sales and, of course, sharing are all included in the reasonable annual fee. When folks with the same pursuits meet, it’s inevitable that friendships form and a great deal of sharing does take place. The OHA website, GardenOntario.

org, is easy-to-use and can help newcom- ers to a community find information about wihch society you may want to join. You can search for your twon or city alphabeti- cally for meeting places and times, as well for contact information should you have ques- tions. The OHA newsletter, The Trillium, can be opened from the home page for fur- ther information. The OHA holds an annual general meet- ing and convention that all members of the

societies can attend. The various districts take turns hosting. This year Niagara of District 9 will welcome provincial delegates from August 17-19 with a theme of ‘Gar- dening Then and Now, 1812-2012’. The convention is a place where many

gardeners meet one another each year to rekindle their camaraderie and enjoy a ros- ter of speakers, workshops, competitions, bus trips and good food. Where to stay or eat is planned well in advance and the three days of meetings and fun things to do runs smoothly. Delegates register for the con- vention through their own society with af- fordable costs to encourage and enable as many people to attend that want to. If you already belong to a horticultural

society, bring a first time friend to a meet- ing so they too can join and start building their knowledge of gardening and circle of friends.
