Plan submied for free school
THE Jubilee Church is seeking planning approval to use Gatland House in Gatland Lane, Fant for its new free primary school. The Jubilee School opened its
doors in September to two recep- tion classes, catering for a total of 60 pupils. The school plans to in- crease its numbers by two forms of entry every year until September 2020, when it should have reached its 420-pupil capacity, looked after by 35 full-time members of staff. Gatland Housewas leased to the
NHS by KCC to run a child and adolescent mental health service.A pupil referral unit was also oper- ated from the site until October 2012, by which time all services had moved to Heathside in Cox- heath. Planning consent was later granted for the conversion of the building into 14 flats, but this scheme never took place. The applicant predicts that by
2020 about 60% (252) of pupils will arrive by foot, with 39% (164) taken by car and 1% (four) travelling by bus.
A supporting statement said: “It
is anticipated that the proposed school will generate up to 137 ve- hicle trips – 274 two-way vehicle movements per peak period re- lated to pupils. It is anticipated that staff will generate up to 25 vehicles trips associated with staff per peak period. “Without mitigation, the devel- opment would result in on-street short-term peak period parking demand of 137 spaces relating to pupils. Staff demand will be ac- commodated within the on-site car park. “It is recommended that school
warning signage be erected to alert drivers to the location of the school. School Keep Clear mark- ings at the school accesses, and double yellow line waiting restric- tions at Gatland Lane junctions with Ridgway and Chamberlain Avenue are recommended to en- sure intervisibility between vehi- cles and pedestrians is maintained.” Maidstone Council will deter- mine the planning application.

Doors open for first class
CELEBRATIONS were in full swing for the official opening of Jubilee Primary School in Fant. Just a few weeks previously the school had opened its doors to the
first intake of pupils at the refurbished former Gatland House in Gatland Lane. The ceremony began with pupils enthusiastically singing a school song and the ribbon was cut by the oldest and youngest pupil. Speeches were made by head teacher Anne Allen, chairman of
governors Bryan Fitzgerald, and member Neil Pattison and a time capsule was buried containing letters, pictures and memorable items from each of the current cohort of the school. The ceremony was attended by local councillors and church leaders,
MP Helen Grant, PCSO FrankWoollett, members of the Department for Education, the Education Funding Agency and the New Schools Network. The time capsule will be uncovered in 10 years by a later generation of Jubilee Primary School pupils.
