ABB to supply power distribution system to new Klabin mill

voltage power distribution system supplied by ABB. The contract to supply the 34.5kV

K

system, based on gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) technology, is expected to be carried out by the end of 2014 and includes design, supply, commissioning and startup services. Costing $2.4 billion, Klabin’s

Project Puma is constructing the mill at Ortigueira in Paraná state, not far from the company’s existing paper mill at Telêmaco Borba, with expected start up in

the first quarter of 2016. The mill will have yearly

capacity of 1.5 million tons of pulp, of which 1.1 million tons

Evaporator improvements for Domtar’s Ashdown mill

An evaporator train at the Domtar Pulp & Paper Mill in Ashdown, Arkansas, is being upgraded with equipment and services supplied by Valmet. Objective is to cut energy consumption and fresh water usage along with improving the evaporator’s reliability and performance. “Domtar selected Valmet for this

project because of the technology proposed for the upgrade, total cost of ownership considerations and the successful long-term relationship we have with Valmet,” said Jimmy Evans, strategic contracts manager for Domtar. Raymond Burelle, regional sales manager for Valmet, added: “We worked closely with Domtar to optimise the technical solution

that would meet their project objectives, including providing a system that would be simpler and safer to operate.” Valmet will supply evaporator

vessels that are required to upgrade the existing concentrators as well as several other smaller vessels and other miscellaneous equipment. Based at Montreal in Canada,

Domtar operates 13 mills in North America and makes and distributes a range of fibre-based products including communication papers, speciality and packaging papers, and absorbent hygiene products with sales of US$5.4 billion in 2013. Domtar’s Ashdown mill has three pulp lines and three paper machines with capacity of 700,000 tons a year.

will be short fibre (eucalyptus) and 400,000 tons of long fibre (pine), part of which will be converted into fluff pulp.

Included in the project is a 270 MW biomass generation facility enabling the mill to be energy self-sufficient, generating more than 150 MW that will be available for sale to the national grid; a 42 km 230 Kv transmission line connecting it to the national grid; storage facilities in the port of Paranaguá; and a 22 km railway to connect the mill to the existing rail network, providing access to dedicated port facilities. ABB’s contribution with the

power distribution system includes the Is-limiter, claimed to be the world’s fastest power switching device, and cabinet modularity.

Chuancheng mill in China uprates its PM1 and PM2 machines

Zhejiang Chuancheng Industrial has ordered dispersing systems, disc filters, and refiners for its PM1 and PM2 machines from Andritz for commissioning in the final quarter of 2015. The order for PM1 includes

two dispersing systems, a save- all disc filter, five thickeners, two TwinFlo refiners, and three MC pumps to produce 350,000

tons of kraft liner per year. The PM2, which produces corrugated medium grades with a capacity of 250,000 tons per year, will be equipped with one save-all disc filter, two thickeners, and one refiner. Zhejiang Chuancheng is a member of the Yongtai group, one of the leading paper producers in China.
