It doesn’t matter what profession or line of work (or not) you are in, you will have been affected by the economic downturn.


Dentists have been forced to adapt in order to survive this recession and many have found it tough. Some have left, some have retired, but many have stayed and fought for their businesses and their livelihoods.


On page seven we feature the views of four very different practitioners working in Ireland


today. They gave us their views on whether they think dentistry is coming out the other side, and whether they are seeing the green shoots of recovery.


I would say that the overall feeling is one of very cautious optimism. The crash has forced a lot of practitioners to streamline and become more efficient, but there are still uncertainties ahead. Reversing, even partially, the cutbacks in the PRSI and Medical Card schemes could have a big

effect, for both dentists and patients, but the Government and the HSE haven’t shown any indication this is on the cards. And then there is the uncertainty around the new Dentists Act. The prospect of added expenses could be the final straw for many dentist who have been put through the mill in the last few years.
