Flood Mitigation The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded the City of Chesapeake a $1.3 million grant as part of the Hazard Mitigation Assistance program (HMA). The grant funds will be used for the acquisition of five flood-prone properties and the elevation of one flood-prone home in the City.
The awarding of this grant further enhances the City's on-going comprehensive hazard mitigation strategy and its efforts to increase flood resiliency, which have been in place for more than a decade. A previous grant of $1.2 million in 2012 provided for the acquisition of six properties.
The properties affected by this grant all have suffered repeated loss and/or damage due to flooding. They are located in the Mains Creek, Fernwood Farms, and Inland Colony neighborhoods, some of the flood-prone sections of the City.
Property owners interested in being included in future HMA grant applications should contact the City's Office of Emergency Management at 382-6504 for information on the grant process.

Black Flag by Elizabeth Catlett - Dr. Evelyn Craig Ireland Hurd (far left) presents the Black Flag sculpture to HU President Dr. William R. Harvey and the Museum staff.
Hampton, Va.- On Sept. 26 Dr. Evelyn Craig Ireland Hurd, of Virginia Beach, donated a sculpture by Elizabeth Catlett to the Hampton University Museum. The sculpture, Black Flag, created in 1970 is one of several large female figures that Catlett carved between 1970-1975.
Hurd, a retired psychologist and mental health services administrator, and her late husband Dr. Charles S. Ireland, collected the piece. This very important piece carved from Spanish cedar was completed one year after Catlett completed one of her most known sculptures, Homage to my Young Black Sisters. Catlett did not work in sculpture until 1955 after her youngest son started school. She studied with noted Mexican sculptor Francisco Zuniga, who interested her in pre-Hispanic and Mexican stone carving and ceramic sculpture. In the mid-50s she learned woodcarving from another prominent Mexican sculptor, Jose L. Ruiz.
The Hampton University Museum has the largest existing collection of works in any museum by Catlett. One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, known primarily as a printmaker and sculptor, Catlett is acclaimed both for her technical brilliance and the emotional impact of her work. Proud of her African-American heritage Catlett produces compassionate, heroic images of ordinary people. Her works, which express the themes of injustice, black women as figures of strength, and the mother and child bond, reflect her shared pride, grief, joy and outrage of the human condition.

Educators Team Up With Employers
to Tackle the Skills Gap Hampton/Virginia Beach, VA - A cursory search of the internet paints a startling picture of the current landscape of the American workforce: “Two thirds of U.S. hiring managers say the recent college graduates are underprepared to fill entry-level positions.” “Fifty percent of U.S. employers experience difficulty filling mission-critical positions within their organizations.” “Over thirty-five percent of millennials are unemployed.”
This research indicates that finding top talent has been a persistent problem for employers and the skills gap seems to be widening, contributing to unemployment and stifling workforce expansion efforts. To help strengthen the connections between educators and employers to build stronger collaboration along the college to career continuum, Bryant & Stratton College today announced their second annual Employability Summit, which will tackle the theme “Addressing the Skills Gap,” will take place on October 29 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. ET.
