Dreamliner for Philadelphia and Calgary News Roundup


IAG Cargo is to introduce the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on its routes from London Heathrow to Philadelphia and Calgary, increasing total capacity on each flight to 14 tons. Moreover, advanced hold air conditioning makes the B787 ideal for the growing trade in temperature-controlled pharmaceuticals, serviced by IAG Cargo’s Constant Climate product. This will be of particular benefit on the Calgary route, says IAG. One of IAG Cargo’s twice daily flights to Philadelphia is already


operated by the B787, while the second service continues to be operated by the B777. The route will revert to being serviced by B767 and B777 aircraſt from the start of the winter schedule. The daily service to Calgary is due to be served by the B787 later this year. (US East Coast P.29)

DHL Global Forwarding has launched a new service


for


life sciences products needing extremely low temperatures. It allows shipments to be reliably maintained at minus 150º Celsius for at least 10 days. The service is maintained by LifeConEx, DHL’s temperature management specialist

Cryoport. The core of the new service is a non-hazardous


liquid nitrogen dry vapour shipper which has an IATA A152 waiver and is classified as non- hazardous. Compared to dry ice, which needs to be replenished every few days and is prone to temperature deviations, the technology is more reliable for fragile and temperature- sensitive biomaterials, says DHL. The solution will include an online temperature monitoring tool to allow customers to track their shipments at any time.


Swiss signs WCA specialist cargo deal


Swiss International Air Lines’ Swiss WorldCargo division has signed a partnership agreement with freight forwarding network WCA. Under the memorandum of


understanding, WorldCargo will Swiss undertake


a number of unique cross- cooperation projects with three of WCA’s specialist groups – WCA Pharma, WCA Time Critical and WCA Dangerous Goods. The aim is to generate new business

in burgeoning sectors of the industry. Executives from both organisations will hold regular meetings to ensure the efficiency, quality and accessibility of end-to-end logistics solutions for specialist shippers. The two organisations will also exchange product and

Capacity weighs heavy on airfreight market


The capacity some airlines are bringing onto the main markets is driving airfreight yields down to a level that will be unsustainable for many operators, warned Virgin Atlantic’s director of cargo, John Lloyd. Yields in the first half of the year were flat in the Europe, Middle East and Africa and Asia Pacific. The drive for all-in ULD rates in the American market and increased customer buying power due to excess market capacity meant this was the market most impacted by falling yields. However, Virgin itself saw


tonnage rise 1% in the first six months of 2014 to 111,196 tonnes and a 3% increase in its load factor to 76% network-wide, despite a 3% reduction in the airline’s cargo capacity in the six months to the end of June. Virgin Atlantic is to drop


flights to Cape Town, Mumbai, Tokyo and Vancouver in favour of


expanding its transatlantic


services. It will continue to fly to Delhi and Johannesburg. The carrier – now 49% owned by the US Delta Airlines – partly blamed the lack of slots at Heathrow for its decision.


A big plane for a big job


Thanet Council is to draw up a plan to reopen Manston Airport, closed by its owners the Gloag Foundation in May in the face of heavy losses. Councillors have accepted the recommendations of a new report by Falcon Consultancy into how to make the airport viable and Thanet said it would test the market to gauge interest in buying the airport. However, the report had suggested hundreds of millions of pounds of investment would be needed.


Delta Air Lines will offer daily services between Manchester International Airport and New York John F. Kennedy International Airport from 2 June 2015 and launch its first non-stop service between London-Heathrow and Newark on 29 March. Both routes will be operated in conjunction with joint venture partner Virgin Atlantic.


Etihad Airways is to launch non-stop daily flights between its home hub at Abu Dhabi and Edinburgh next year. The route will be operated by Airbus A330-200 aircraſt with a 168-tonne cargo capacity per week in both directions, and will offer connections destinations across the Gulf, Asia, Australia and Africa. On 28 May, rival Qatar Airways opened a new five-days-a-week 787 route from Edinburgh to its home hub, Doha.


Etihad Cargo has started twice-weekly freighter flights between its Abu Dhabi home hub and Hanoi’s Nội Bài International Airport in Vietnam. The service will be operated by an Airbus A330-200F freighter, with a capacity of 60 tonnes.


Etihad Cargo is offering SkyStables, a new equine service for transporting horses and similar species. It is being rolled-out across Etihad Cargo’s scheduled network of 44 freighter destinations with personalised charter services to other cities also available. Horses travel in dedicated stalls equipped with anti-slip floors, loaded in temperature controlled sections of the aircraſt and the animals can be attended to by their grooms throughout the flight.


Emirates is offering daily services from its Dubai hub to the Nigerian capital, Abuja. The Airbus A340-300 offers over 180 tonnes of cargo capacity a week on the route. Services to Lagos were launched just over 10 years ago.


Luſthansa Cargo is to operate twice-weekly MD11 freighter flights from Frankfurt to Lagos from 15 September. A total of 170 tonnes of capacity will be available each week on the flights, which will operate on Monday and Thursday. Aſter Lagos, the freighter will fly on to Johannesburg and the return leg to Frankfurt will include a stopover in Nairobi.


Panalpina has added Puerto Rico to its Cargolux-operated controlled freighter network. The weekly service from San Juan to Luxembourg gives healthcare customers guaranteed upliſt on a Boeing 747-400F for temperature-sensitive goods.


The unique Antonov AN-225 - the world’s largest aircraft – came into its own in moving a 139-tonne heat exchanger from Germany to Canada on 25 June. The equipment with its specially- constructed load cradle and associated handling equipment actually topped out at 147 tonnes, much too heavy for any other aircraft. The charterer was the Karpeles Flight Services charter arm of DB Schenker and the flight was arranged, managed and operated by Antonov Airlines.


Qatar Airways Cargo has added a second A330 freighter service from its home hub in Doha to Delhi following introduction of its first service on 4 May. The Middle East carrier also completed the transition to a fully automated cargo terminal at Hamad International Airport when it moved to the new state-of-the-art facility.
