Medical hub planned for town centre offices

AMEDICAL hub could be estab- lished at the former NFU Mutual building in Albion Place, Maid- stone. The Kent & Medway NHS and

Social Care Partnership has an- nounced it wants to join two med- ical centres that are relocating to the empty offices. The Downs Mail has previously reported that the Marsham Street Surgery and St Luke’sMedical Cen- tre plan to relocate to the building. They are likely to be joined by KMPT, currently based at the Kingswood Community Mental Health Centre in Union Street. Asupporting statement said: “The current Kingswood CMHC proper- ties are uneconomic, being split over two sites in Union Street, both being single-storey. “Both the existing local sites are of

grated onto one site – neither of the current sites can accommodate all of the services. “Currently there are approxi- mately 140 staff to relocate and it is expected that the integration of the services and their ability towork in a fit-for-purpose environment will see further improvements made to service delivery, as well as greatly improving client experience.” A pharmacy is also proposed for

the ground floor. The two medical practices employ 20 staff and serve 13,000 patients. The statement added: “Recently the practice oper- ating from King Street, Maidstone,

has left the town centre and relo- cated on the London Road. This has had a significant impact on patients seeking town centreGPservices and is likely to result in an increase of patient numbers which the current premises cannot accommodate. “The practices struggle to provide

an extensive range of general med- ical and enhanced services for their patient population and these could be enhanced and improved through the provision of additional and suit- able accommodation for the delivery of modern primary care services.” Maidstone Council will determine the planning application.
