Young athletes chosen to join national teams

TWOpupils from Maidstone’s In- victa Grammar School in Hunts- man Lane,Vinters Park, have been chosen to join national teams. Emily Smith (14) has been chosen

to compete for Great Britain on the double mini trampoline in the Loule Cup competition in Portugal. The youngster from Lunsford

Lane, Larkfield, took up gymnastics from an early age, and has been trampolining for four years, accord- ing to her father, Phil. Hesaid: “Emily has been compet-

ing on the national circuit for a few years and was selected for Portugal on the back of results she got there. “She is really looking forward to competing in Portugal and also hopes to put herself forward for se- lection for the World Age Group Games in theUSAlater in the year.” Now Emily is looking for spon- sorship to help with the cost of com- peting in future international events. Fellow pupil Ayishah Chaudry

(13) is currently in the Kent Under 14 korfball team– a sport which has

similarities to netball and basketball. The talented player from Fullers

Close, Bearsted, also excels at vol- leyball and was selected at the age of 11 to play for England. Coaches have also contacted her about play- ing in the England Under 16 girls’ team next year. Ayishah represents the South East

in regional competitions and at- tends international tournaments, with the school’s support. Her mother Katherine said that as

well as competing, Ayishah trains two to three times a week for each sport and also plays for a local women’s volleyball team. Mrs Chaudry is a volleyball

player herself, and her partner is a coach. Ayishah’s brother also plays volleyball for England. Her daughter’s interest in korfball

was sparked after a session at Thurnham Infant School in Bearsted when shewas six. She joined a local club, Bearsted Korfball Club based at Aylesford School, at the same age, accompa- nying her older brother. “Ayishah was too young really,

but shewas so keen to play they let her join in and she carried on from there,” said Mrs Chaudry. Invented in Holland in 1902, korf-

ball has mixed and all-women leagues, but no men’s league. Played by teams of eight, the object is to throw a ball through a bottomless basket mounted on a high pole.

News Village safari

HOLLINGBOURNE householders will be selling goodies from their driveways and gardens in the vil- lage’s sixth safari market. Stalls will be set up at 50 ad- dresses from the A20 to the Pil- grims Way on September 6, with items on sale from 9am to 2pm. Maps of the stalls will be avail-

able for £1 from Christopher’s – the village shop – a week before the sale, or from the Cardwell Pavilion on the Lance Memorial Field, on the corner of Greenway Court Road on the day. Maps contain a hidden gem and earn shoppers entry into the most visited stalls competition. Hot bacon and sausage rolls will

be available from the pavilion, and there is free parking on the field.

Forecourt plan THE shop at the Texaco Garage in Ashford Road between Harriet- sham and Lenham will more than double in size, subject to planning permission. Maidstone Council will decide whether the company can increase its retail space from 197sqm to 418.5sqm. The application would also decrease the number of car fu- elling points from eight to six, but include 10 parking spaces to pre- vent congestion.
