Flat scheme

PLANS to turn a former boathouse in the garden of 1 Bockingford Mill Cottages into a one-bedroom flat have been recommended for ap- proval by the parish council. However, therewere five absten-

tions when the change of use appli- cation came to the vote over concerns that the building is in a conservation area and could be sold on. The applicant stated that the new accommodation would be for a family member who currently lives in the basement of the main house. Unfortunately, during the severe weather last winter this accommo- dation was seriously flooded and has now become too damp to oc- cupy.

Councillors approved the plan

with an occupancy clause, linking it to the main dwelling. The application still needs to be determined by Maidstone Council.

Parking time

PARISH councillors agreed to de- bate the permitted parking period at the car park in Church Street at their next meeting. It followed a request to recon-

sider the time limit from a local trader who said the two-hour park- ing limitwas putting off some cus- tomers, particularly at the hair salon.

Councillors agreed to discuss the concerns at their next meeting and look at extending the limit on park- ing to three hours.

said: “The goodweather obviously helped make it a success, but the option of being able to move into the school should theweather have changed for the worst, gave stall- holders confidence to attend.” The report recommended contin-

cost the parish council money, and it is keen to hear any ideas to im-

He thanked the organising team. Particularly successful were the

pony rides, according to the parish council’s clerk, who said: “There were long queues for the rides and the school’s site manager was very pleased with the amount of manure produced for the gardens. “Other councillors thought this

prove it and push it in to profit next year. Tovil Parish Council’s chairman

said: “I thinkwe should all be very pleased with the outcome. While we still made an overall financial loss, this included paying for new advertising banners, and was less of a loss than was budgeted for.”

Asbestos concern in valley

ABANDONEDbuildingmaterials found in the lower Loose Valley recently purchased by Tovil Parish Council and the Valley Conservation Society are to be analysed by a professional com- pany.

Reassurances were requested

from the Valley Conservation Society, whose members are un- dertaking renovation work in the area, after hearing rumours

about the possible removal of asbestos from the site. An officer of the Valley Con- servation Society responded by saying: “The material is covered by undergrowth and we are not sure at this stage if it is asbestos or not, but we will get it analysed and if it is, it will be re- moved in the appropriate way.” He said the parish council would be kept informed.

Members asked for costings for Pothole project a big success

PAVING and pothole repairs have been carried out by the county council after being grouped to- gether into a single repair project. Tovil parish councillors were in- formed that KCC had proposed a road closure order for a single re- pair, but hadwarmed to the idea of

carrying out several repairs near the Mill Ponds and surrounding area. All the repairs were then un- dertaken during a single road clo- sure, although there are still some repairs to be made. Itwas said that this has proved to be a successful approach.

proved an excellent event for get- ting the community together. Itwas unfortunate that we did lose money on it, but the school made some money and our losses were lower than we experienced in pre- vious years.” The chairman emphasised that

volunteers were vital to creating a successful event.

Chip problem

CONCERNS were expressed by elderly residents, pedestrians and parents with buggies over the trip hazard caused by wandering bark chips in Wharf Road. Pedestrians said the wood chip recently placed at the side of the pavement became stuck in pram wheels and could trip up those walking along the pavement. Efforts were being made to add an edge to hold the bark in place.
