Södra Cell orders wood chipping plant

A new wood chipping plant has been ordered from Valmet by Södra Cell for its pulp mill at Mörrum, Sweden. The delivery is part of Södra Cell’s project to increase pulp production at the mill. The order is included in Valmet’s third quarter 2014 orders received and is valued at around 20 million Euros. Valmet’s delivery will consist of a complete woodroom, including two wood debarking and chipping lines, bark handling and chip conveying systems. The start-up of the new wood chipping plant is scheduled for Spring, 2016.

at Södra Cell Mörrum, where the company currently operates two parallel pulp lines for the produc- tion of softwood pulp and textile pulp (dissolving pulp). In addition to the new wood chipping plant, one of the mill’s two pulp lines will be upgraded. The investment is ex- pected to increase production from 380,000 tons to about 425,000 tons per year.

In June, Valmet also announced that it will undertake a major rebuild and supply new equipment to Södra Cell’s Värö pulp mill, where an investment of more than 400 million Euros is being made to increase the mill’s pulp produc- tion capacity from 425,000 tons

to 700,000 tons per year. “We look forward to co-operating with Valmet in this project,” said Gunilla Saltin, CEO, Södra Cell.

“Good co-operation with Södra Cell continues in the Mörrum pulp mill upgrade. Valmet is the world’s leading supplier of wood handling systems. The new wood chipping plant will be utilising industry- leading technology and includes Valmet’s patented log feeding system – GentleFeed,” confi rmed Jyrki Holmala, President, Pulp and Energy Business Line, Valmet.

Based in the South-West of England, Forest Fuels has been approved as a supplier on the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) Biomass Suppliers List for both wood chips and pellets. The list will help provide renewable heat incentive (RHI) participants with a way to demonstrate that their fuel complies with RHI sustainability standards.

Forest Fuels is also third-party Quality Assured via Woodsure for wood chip and ENplus for wood pellet fuels.

Peter Solly, Managing Direc- tor of Forest Fuels, said: “Hav- ing been involved in working groups in the early days of the BSL process, we are pleased that the scheme is now live. “The BSL is one of a suite of ways that DECC ensures that installations supported via the RHI scheme cut carbon emis- sions and that the fuel they are burning is sustainably sourced. “As a supplier approved under the BSL, Forest Fuels demonstrate that the wood fuel we provide will deliver at least 60% cuts in carbon emissions and also comes from auditable, sustainability grown sources.”
