How to lay a
brick patio the easy way

Make a rough plan. Draw a rough outline (Figure 1) of the work that lies ahead. It doesn’t have to be to scale but you should take measurements and include them in your drawing.

Measure for your excavation. Mark out the area you plan to build on, adding an extra foot all around. Before you dig, figure out the depth you need (Figure 2), calculating in the thickness of the base (quarter down or three- quarter down limestone) gravel which should be five to seven inches in soft, clay based soil or as little as two to three inches in rockier ground, plus the top layer of sand or quarter down to nestle your pavers in added to the thickness of the pavers. (Some people add landscape liner
at this point to prevent the base from working into the soil.)
Mark out the edges and double check the depth before removing soil.
