Why breakfast is the most important meal of the day

very important step to losing and maintaining weight is starting your day with a healthy breakfast. So, no more saying, ‘I don’t have time,’ or ‘I’m trying to lose weight so I’ve stopped eating breakfast.’

A

Did you know that those who regularly eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight? When you skip breakfast your blood sugar levels drop below the normal level and you’ll most likely experience cravings and a drop in energy. This results in grabbing a ‘quick snack’ mid-morning which is usually a high sugar food like biscuits, pastries or a muffin. These sorts of foods cause an immediate surge in your blood sugar level which results in your body needing to release insulin to remove the excess sugar from your blood turning its excess into fat = WEIGHT GAIN!

By eating 5 small meals a day (3 meals plus 2 snacks) which starts with a healthy breakfast, you can maintain your blood sugar level which will result in your body using its own stored fats to get more energy = WEIGHT LOSS!

Not sure what to eat for breakfast? Breakfast should include protein and plenty of fibre; the combination will help satisfy your hunger and will keep you feeling full. The protein can come from low-fat meat, eggs, nuts or dairy products. High-fibre foods include fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Some breakfast ideas: Omelette or Scrambled Eggs: 2 eggs with added ingredients, to taste – e.g. mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes and feta.

Yogurt & Berries: Small pot 0% fat Greek yogurt with fresh berries, 2 tbsp muesli & 2 tsp ground flax seed.

Fruit Smoothie: 0% fat Greek yogurt, mixed berries (frozen are great!) & skimmed or soya milk.

Children’s Cancer Centre Appeal

We are delighted to announce that we have now passed the £3 million mark in our £4 million Children’s Cancer Centre Appeal.

Our current cancer ward is cramped and uncomfortable, and doesn’t match the level of care we provide. With the help of our fundraising supporters, we can reach the target needed to achieve the world class Cancer Centre our patients and their families deserve.

The appeal was launched in July 2012 and has touched the hearts of our supporters who have amazed us with their generosity. 3 year old patient, Persian Bristoll, helped us celebrate reaching this key milestone. Persian was diagnosed with kidney cancer in April last year and has been a regular visitor to Ward 15 where he has undergone surgery and received chemotherapy. His mum, Kathleen, has been busily fundraising and raised over £700 for the appeal. “The doctors and nurse have been incredible” she says “but the ward really does need to be updated so that families have more private space. After Persian’s diagnosis I was very conscious that other children and parents could hear me crying.”

The good news is that Persian has now received the all clear and will be starting school later this year, by which time we hope the Appeal will have hit its final target. Children like Persian and mums like Kathleen deserve the very best facilities and our wonderful fundraisers are making that dream a reality.
