News Victoria moves
on from castle LEEDS Castle’s chief executive is moving on after holding the fort for 10 years.
Victoria Wal-
lace (left), who will leave in Octo- ber, says her time at the castle had been the most wonderful experi- ence. She said: “I am
so grateful to the charity’s trustees for putting their faith in me. I will miss the Castle and its amazing staff enormously.” Over the past 10 years, the castle’s
visitor numbers have grown, with a programme of events and new initiatives including the glampsite, a bed-and-breakfast business as well as Go Ape! and Segway con- cessions. The Chairman of the Leeds Cas-
tle Foundation, Niall Dickson said: “Victoria has done a first class job for Leeds Castle. Thanks to her vi- sion, we have an exciting pro- gramme to build on her legacy, which will make the most of this very special place.” He wished her well in her new
role as director general of the Com- monwealth War Graves Commis- sion.

A NOTORIOUS crack house in Maidstone has been closed down. The flat in Church Street will re-
main boarded up for three months after police obtained an order from Maidstone magistrates on June 16. The court heard the property
had been a regular destination for those looking to buy Class A drugs in the town and a venue for anti-social behaviour.
The order – known as a crack
house closure – makes it an of- fence for anyone to enter the prop- erty during this time. The property is now empty and
a sign has been put on the door advising callers of the restriction. Police hope it will reduce anti-
social behaviour in the area and the use of drugs in the town centre and surrounding areas. Maidstone town centre Sergeant John Marshall said: “The informa-

SPORTS minister Helen Grant visited Pegasus Gymnastics Club in Tovil to check out their new facilities. The club provides international level coaching as well as opportu-
nities for children from babies and pre-school to school age children and teenagers. It recently moved to Tovil from its former home in Bearsted. The MP for Maidstone and theWeald met one of the club’s rising
stars, Courtney Tulloch, and even tried the balance beam. Mrs Grant said: “Sport is such an important force in the commu-
nity – it gave me real focus and drive growing up – and Pegasus is a great example of what sport, particularly gymnastics, can do for young people. “The Club produces some of the UK’s best gymnasts with some
real medal hopes for Rio 2016. I was in awe of Courtney Tulloch’s ability on the pommel horse, and it’s a tribute to him and all involved with the club that they are competing at the top level.”
tion we have received is that the flat has caused persistent prob- lems and nuisance to residents.” He said the flat had been under
surveillance, during which time a comprehensive dossier of evi- dence was produced to get the court order. Sgt Marshall added: “The clo-
sure means that the honest and hard-working residents who live close by should see an improve- ment in their quality of life.”
