Build a bridge

Moving from Spain to Scotland, Borja Sanroman and his wife are more than confident they can have successful careers – and a great quality of life

AFTER seven years in the Spanish automotive engineering industry, 2010 found Borja Sanroman ready for a fresh challenge. Armed with his recently earned

European Welding Engineer Diploma, Borja and his wife Geni Garcia decided to make the move to Scotland; he to seek work in the booming oil and gas industry and she to study for a Masters degree at Edinburgh’s Heriot Watt University. “My wife and I see English as the language of business, so that was one of our first reasons for choosing Scotland,” said Borja. “We spent our first year here living in Edinburgh and attending language school – my wife already had

good English, but I started from scratch. “The oil and gas engineering opportunities here in Scotland are very strong – certainly stronger than in other European countries – so it made a lot of sense for me. My wife specialises in marine environment protection, which is another real strength for Scotland and Heriot Watt University is well respected throughout Europe.” It did not take the couple long to settle in and, after six months, Borja secured a job as a welding engineer at FMC Technologies’ plant in Dunfermline. As one of the world’s leading providers of oil and gas equipment and services, FMC Technologies is accustomed to

finding the skills it needs from the best local and international talent. Borja continued: “One of the main things that attracted me to FMC Technologies was its ‘core values’, which are similar to my own personal work ethic. For example integrity, cooperation, innovation and also the strong philosophy around quality, safety and sustainability. “I’m also here because I fundamentally

like what I do, which is working at the forefront of my engineering discipline. This allows me to grow as a professional and develop my technical skills to a higher level. I enjoy the hands-on nature of the role; being based in the workshop, looking at problems and trying to solve them.
