I look into his eyes and see the beginning of the universe. As he turns away, I catch a glimpse of the end of the universe. And for a brief moment I understand Time... Infinity... God.
One of the many benefits I receive
from being involved with Natural Awaken- ings is the opportunity to explore parts of the city that I don’t normally get to, such as the Linden Hills neighborhood. I was there in April while attending the Conscious Living Expo at the Lake Harriet Spiritual Center. I took a break and walked around the small neighborhood, stopping in a store on my way back. That’s where I found this poetry book. The cover was appealing and when I opened the pages, I saw some lovely, simple,

colorful illustrations and I read one poem. It spoke to me. I purchased the book. Every night I read one poem, sometimes two. As much as my heart sings at being a newly minted grandmother on this year’s
Mother’s Day, it also aches for those mothers who have lost a child or children who have lost a parent. Life can be so beautiful and so maddeningly sad as well. For those of you who may be dealing with death and loss, we are privileged to
have two advertisers in our magazine who specialize in grief. Cheryl Downey is a retired hospice chaplain who has started her own business as a grief counselor. Gary Beaver is a psychologist who uses a form of psychotherapy to help his clients deal with the loss of a loved one, including family pets. Both offer free consultations to see if their service is helpful to you. I encourage you to reach out if you feel called to do so. Both of these experts can help those who are grieving move back into the light, joy and beauty of life.
In gratitude,
other’s Day is May 11 and will be extra special for my hus- band and me, as our daughters both became mothers in the
last 10 months! What an honor and blessing to see our girls enter this new stage of life as we welcome our two grandsons into the world. It’s amazing to watch them grow and see the world through their eyes. Below is a passage from a poem by Paul Walker, serendipi-
tously titled “Jackie,” about his 9-year-old grandson. I don’t nor- mally read poetry, but I happened to pick up a local book called
Seasons: Poems from the Southwest Journal Poetry Project, and this poem made me think of both of my grandsons.
