There was a nice choice of feature phones on the left with the HTC One (M8) and the One Mini both taking pride of place as you walked in. I had to wait while the sales adviser dealt with customers but even after that I still had to approach him for help. I said I was interested in the M8 and he asked me did I want to buy? I asked him to go deeper into the specs and he was able to tell me that the camera was better but used jargon that can sound a little baffling. He also said the M8 had a bigger internal memory and that the sound had been improved. He was able to tell me that it had a faster processor and could reel off the specs but I had to ask what that meant in real terms. He gave me contract details and advised that for the extra £9 a month he'd go for the M8 over its predecessor. In reality, he didn't make a convincing enough case and failed to offer a demo.

Mystery Shopper wants to buy the HTC One (M8). Can our retailers offer a comprehensive demo of the latest device and convince him to go for the latest model?

The O2 store had a nice range of devices, no gaps in the product line on show apart from one glaring one – the HTC One (M8). The adviser said they had one in the drawer when I asked for a demo.

Another adviser said that it was in the back. Apparently there were no brackets to fix it to the display. The model finally appeared and the

adviser was able to explain to me better than most that the pictures would have more colour depth than on its predecessor. He also said it was lighter than its predecessor. On contract it was available on O2 Refresh for £38 per month for unlimited minutes, texts and 2GB data. This came with £100-worth of House of Fraser vouchers and a free case. He was very friendly but was another

adviser who failed to make the case for buying the newer model.

The whole front of the store was covered with branding for the One (M8) but the HTC island had not been updated and the M8 was in the middle of the other devices. As with many of the advisers, the assistant picked out the enhanced camera as a key selling point but struggled to describe it. He did explain that what HTC had done to it would mean it was higher quality. He said it had a Snapdragon processor, again not meaning much to the lay person. The sound quality was identified as the same as the HTC One even though it was improved. On contract he recommended a £42 per month deal for unlimited calls, texts and 4GB of 4G data on EE. He also said it comes with a speaker but it wasn't made clear this was an offer. He was clearly a good salesperson and with a little more detail he could have scored far higher.

Again another poor omission in that they had the HTC One out but not the One (M8). Although in fairness to EE, there was branding at the front and in- store inviting you to demo it. The first adviser I spoke to had a

device in my hand in seconds and said a colleague would soon be with me while he dealt with another customer. It was a shame the handset only had three per cent of battery left. I asked him about the differences compared with the One and he said it had a better camera and it is faster. Not much detail but fair enough. On contract he said there was a special introductory offer of £38 per month for unlimited calls and texts as well as 2GB of data and a £40 up- front cost. The only difference in price between the two is the £10 extra upfront fee. He explained this in a baffled manner, as if to say "Why wouldn't you?"
