repairs. This means wood and fi berglass as needed. A wooden Star is also in and she is having keel work done.


They are also doing some rigging work on some of the older boats.


Finestkind Boat Yard in Harpswell is modifying the stern of a Duffy 42.


Handy Boat in Falmouth has under- gone some major changes over the last few years. The major change was a renovation of the main building, mostly the front section, which houses the restaurant, the Dockside Grill, and boat yard offi ces. They redid the second fl oor adding additional offi ce space for outside businesses, one is currently available for rent. Than last summer they rebuilt the dock building, which will have an assortment of convenience items for sale for boaters. On the third fl oor is still Hallett Canvas & Sails, which also saw some minor upgrades.


Service Manager Craig Brimicombe has been making changes too. He plans to get more of the crew sent off for additional training at all aspects needed in a full service


yard. Some of the courses will include diesel engines, rigging and steering systems. His focus is on creating better service. The Dockside Grill has a bar and dining area that opens onto an outside deck in warm weather. The upstairs dining room in open year round.


Customers have a special membership, which includes parking, free launch service and access to their new shower and laundry room. They are also planning to create in-water dinghy storage.


As for work they have an Island Packet 40 in for a new head system, rebedding the deck hardware, all the varnish wooded and redone and upgrade the electrical system. A Bristol 30 is in having her topsides painted. She was preceded by a Cape Dory


Finestkind Boatyard in Harpswell has been very busy this winter. In the shop is the Willis Beal built 38 footer LIZZIE, owned by a fi sherman from Ogunquit. She is in to be refurbished after three years of hard fi shing. There is a little rot around the windshield, a couple of planks at the stern need to be replaced, as well as stuffi ng boxes, rudder and shaft. They will also do a lot of painting.


Early this winter they began making alterations on the stern of a Duffy 42. The glass work is nearing completion and they will next fi nish up fabricating the washrails, installing the fuel tanks and engine and run- ning gear. They will also install an icemaker, central heat and air conditioning, bait well and fi sh holds. They also need to put in her accommodations. She is scheduled to be launched this summer.


Inside is a 36-foot Marine Trader. Her owner purchased her a couple of years ago and ripped out the interior and any rotten wood. He brought her back to the yard and now they are putting in the engine (120-hp Lehman), which had been rebuilt, fuel tanks and bow thruster before they begin putting in an interior. Her owner is hoping to have her done for the summer of 2015.

Great Island Boat Yard in Brunswick has become one of the premier yards on the coast. Over the last several years they have made a lot of changes around the yards, es- pecially the addition of new buildings. With this has come more storage customers and big projects.


They are repowering a Webber’s Cove 29. She had a Peninsular diesel, which is being replaced with a Yanmar. With the engine out they detailed the bilges and did her annual maintenance.

40. She had a Westerbeke and this is being replaced with a Yanmar. They will also be updating her LP system, and new fuel tanks. An East Bay 55 is in and having her bot- tom soda blasted, barrier coated and bottom painted. They are also going to paint her hull, add teak veneer transom, refurbish her teak decks, rebuild the Freedom lift, upgrade the electronics, add a new stove and do some cabinetry work in the galley and update the canvas. A Grand Banks 42 is having her window frames replaced as well as the windows, paint engine and detail engine room, Awl- grip decks, replace fl ybridge interior, and varnish the brightwork. A Hinckley Talaria 42 is having her bottom soda blasted and then barrier coat- ed, new windlass, upgrade the galley with a new refrigerator, new dorade box on the foredeck, add two new port lights on the forward end of the trunk cabin, and upgrade the Espar heater. A Lyman-Morse 46 is in for a new gen- erator and varnish. A Sabre 402 is getting a windlass, which is located below the deck. A Hinckley Bermuda 40 is having her mast painted, new heads and holding tank, rewiring and replumbing. A J-46 has had her mast removed and this is getting readied for paint. They are also going to install a Leisure Furl system and new electronics. A 48-foot power cat, which was built in New Zealand, is in to have her teak decks refurbished. She will also be Awlgripped top to bottom. A Little Harbor 51 will be getting new heads and holding tanks. This system is be- ing changed from a saltwater to freshwater system. An Appalachian Mountain Club launch is in for some work. She has a fi berglass hull, but has a wooden keel and the wooden keel needs to be replaced. This means that the engine will need to be pulled to do this. Also she will have her cabin sides revarnished and the deck and cockpit painted. A Cape Dory 36 is having her mainte- nance done, before she heads cruising off Labrador between June and October. They are putting in an AIS system and install an Espar heater.


Simmons Boat Works in Friendship has a Calvin Beal 38 hull in the shop, which is being fi nished out as a lobster boat for a fi sherman from New Harbor. Her engine, a C-12 Caterpillar, is in and they are working on fi nishing up the platform and what goes under it. In the cockpit they will cut out the
