FMB backs call for ‘army of small builders’ to boost
house building Increasing the number of small house builders is the key to delivering the number of new homes this country needs, which is why Labour's call for an ‘army of small builders’ is the right step forward to help address the housing crisis, says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB). Brian Berry, FMB Chief Executive, said: “Labour’s plans to boost house building by helping small builders enter the housing market is the right step forward. Over the past 25 years small house builders have been squeezed out of the market. This decline has accelerated over the past five years, as large numbers of firms have either gone out of business or have
diversified out of building homes altogether. Housing is rising up political agenda and will be a key issue during the General Election.
Everyone has the right to a decent affordable home, which is why it is encouraging that the Labour Party is actively seeking ways to achieve this.”

Aberdeen waterfront development 200 jobs are to be created in Aberdeen after
planning permission for a new riverside office development was approved by the city council.
Gold medal winner, Katherine Grainger, who trained on the River Dee in the 1990s. The £5m four storey riverside development will deliver 20,800 sq ft of high quality, open-plan office space on South Esplanade West. Grainger House will have the capacity to house around 200 people, with 47 car spaces available, including four disabled spaces.

Second accolade for Balfour Beatty
Balfour Beatty has won a prestigious award for creating the best new school building in the UK for its work at a London school. The Education Business Awards recognise excellence in British education across 21 categories, with the School Building Award presented to the establishment that creates the most technically advanced building constructed for the purposes of teaching. The Newlands School in Southwark, previously known as Bredinghurst School, was built in three phases by Balfour Beatty and can accommodate up to 70 pupils and 45 members of staff. Many of the students who attend the school have specialist educational needs. The Balfour Beatty project team engaged extensively with students and teachers during the development phase to ensure the layout and design could support their needs.
