A NEWPORT County fan was saved by a quick-thinking police officer after suffering a suspected heart on the way to a game. Lifelong fan Gerald Evans was on his


way to the away game at Torquay on Saturday when he collapsed. The 55-year-old has a history of heart problems and suffered a suspected heart attack to the horror of his neph- ew, Mark Avery. Mr Avery said he could do nothing as


he watched his uncle “die inmyarms”. He couldn’t find a pulse and noticed

that his uncle was not breathing. A Gwent Police officer, who had trav- elled to the game as an escort, wasted no time and began CPR. Mr Evans and his nephew heaped praise on PC Matthew Screen. Mr Avery said: “I can’t thank him


enough. I watched my uncle die in my arms. It was the scariest thing.” Mr Evans was rushed to Torbay Hos- pital and monitored for 24 hours; miss- ing the Exiles secure a vital 1-0 win and end a barren run of form. He said: “It wasn’t quite the away day I was ex- pecting. We were joking about being County till I die, literally. Mark keptme updated with the scores.” Mr Evans was given the all clear and told to take it easy. He aims to be at County’s game against Portsmouth on Saturday and hopes to meet PC Screen.
