nergy used by the Iggesund Paperboard mill at Workington in the
UK is almost completely free of fossil sources following the installation by Andritz last year of a fluidised-bed boiler fuelled by biomass. The journey by road to the mill takes you through the Lake

District which contains some of England’s most dramatic and natural scenery – mountains, lakes, and sparkling streams flowing down to the coast of the Irish Sea. The Workington Mill sits amidst a forest of wind turbines that dot the shoreline, so renewable energy is very big in the area. Iggesund’s mill – with its
new wood yard also supplied by Andritz – may look to the uninitiated like any other big new factory but for those in the know, this is a showcase for manufacturing valuable products in the greenest and leanest way possible.
And the Andritz biomass boiler
is at the heart of Workington Mill’s own ‘green power show’.
