AS A trading standards of- ficer, it would be your job to protect consumers and businesses by promoting a safe and fair trading envi- ronment. You would advise on and enforce the laws on buying, selling, renting and hiring of goods and services. If you can understand tech- nical information and you have good people skills, this job could be for you. In this job you would need


to communicate well and be assertive, tactful and resil- ient. You would also need to have good judgement. To get into this job you could either take a degree or train on the job. With a de- gree you could apply for a po- sition as a graduate trainee TSO. If you don’t have a degree


you could apply for a job as an assistant or trainee TSO and study for professional qualifications while in the job.


The work As a trading standards of-


ficer you could cover a range of issues, including: consumer safety animal welfare


fake goods product labelling weights and measures under-age sales.


In some jobs you could be


involved in all aspects of trading standards work, or you might specialise in one area. Your duties could include: visiting


local traders


and businesses for routine checks or to investigate com- plaints taking samples of goods for testing


checking that weighing scales and measures are ac- curate, for example, beer and spirit measures in pubs and clubs


making sure that labelling


is correct and advertising is not misleading finding unsafe electrical goods and toys advising consumers and businesses about the law investigating


suspected


offences – these could need undercover or surveillance work preparing evidence and go-


ing to court in prosecution cases giving talks, writing re- ports and keeping records.
