who continue to stay on top of the news, especially our local retailers. Yvonne Guibert, owner of Tampa’s holistic pet store, Groovy Cats & Dogs said,“No man- ufactured food or treat is 100% safe. But it’s safer to buy products sourced and made in the United States because we have better systems in place to monitor its produc- tion.”
In September,the
U.S.Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an update to previous reports warning pet owners about the dangers of chicken jerky treats made in China. The confirmed death toll as of September 2012 was 360 dogs, one cat and more than 2,200 severe illness claims. Lawsuits have been filed by some con-
sumers and the allegations were taken seri- ously enough to prompt the FDA to inves- tigate. Investigators were dispatched to China in April by the FDA. The Chinese government cited national sovereignty in not allowing U.S. inspectors to draw ran- dom samples from the plants for testing at United States FDA laboratories.
