Responsible Parenting...

Mixed with all the emotion and excitement of a new birth it is important to remember...

• All births must be registered in 42 days.

• The legal rights known as Parental Responsibility give a parent equal status in the major decisions in parenting. They can include consent to medical treatment, education and religion.

These rights are granted to married parents and also to those unmarried fathers who are registered on the birth certificate. Unless registered, an unmarried father can only obtain parental responsibility through a formal agreement or court order.

• A will is essential for both parents. It is used to allow them to choose how their property and money from life policies and pensions should be used and who should care for their children.
