THE HORSE GAZETTE Arabian news & more from around the state by Ginny Nokes of Seguin, TX.
is happening in their lives. Bert tells me they are still riding but not as often. They moved into their new home in Boerne in November.
Bert shares this Happy New Year to
all as we enter another year. The year greeted us with winter … the real winter.
When the
temperatures drop into the 20’s and the wind blows 30 miles an hour out of the north, we know - it is winter. It was 17 degrees one morning in Seguin. Hope- fully no one had frozen pipes. We ask folks to share
their thoughts and plans for the coming year. Arabian Clubs and Horse Organizations have planned their year. Each seeks to improve their horse activ- ity plans and will welcome ideas and ways to help do this. Members and exhibitors are an important part of the horse pro- gram in Texas. In the Arabian division, entries are down in rated shows due to high costs and numerous other reasons. The 2013 Arabian Nationals was a big success and hopefully, it will encourage clubs to plan shows – rated and open- clin- ics – trail rides – fellowship among members to help its members bond together to make the coming year the best ever.
good news. “Julie Goodnight was at Sister Creek Ranch to shoot episodes for her Horse Show on RDFTV. I was asked to be part of her crew. They asked me to join them when they do this coming years shoot in Flagstaff and I plan to go there.
It’s a great The Central Arabian
Horse Association are known for their super Open Shows with Arabian judges and classes geared to the Arabian horse. They also include “other breed” classes that draws many quality horses.
February 2nd
Their next show is . It’s not that far
away. Alison Cowden tells us. “Our Open shows are scheduled and ready. Ribbons and prizes are over flowing in our office. Board members are excited for the next show season and all four judges have signed on. We are looking forward to our annual “fun and Fuzzy” show. We know you and your ponies have enjoyed some winter va- cation, and this is a great time to get back into your riding routine in a lovely covered arena. There will be a prize
for the horse with the longest coat as well as photos and the awards presentation to the 2013 High Point winners. There will be a couple of changes in this year’s Open Show schedule. Every year we study the class entry numbers and then we re- view our schedule for possible improvements. A couple of alterations are; 1. Our judges observe many quizzical and helpless looks when conducting our Showmanship Halter class. They always tell us that it’s very tempting to stop everything and give an impromptu clinic to explain how much fun it could be, once you know all the cri- teria. So we decided to do just that! At 8:45 we will conduct a FREE CLINIC: WHAT IS SHOWMANSHIP? You don’t need to bring your pony to demonstrate. Just be there at 8:45 sharp and we’ll run it until 9:10, with the Open Show start- ing at 9:15 am. There will be a minor timing change in the class schedule: the Lead Line will return to the 12 pm time slot. If you have further questions email me at acowden@gmail. com” --- IT’S SHOW TIME! (So your horses haven’t been worked due to the Holidays and cold weather, don’t let that stop you from loading up the trailer and heading for the shows. You say “We’re not ready!!! Just remember, you aren’t the only one! It’s not just about winning, it is about getting yourself and your horse thinking SHOW TIME. We hope to see you there. Ginny) BERT GONZALES
still riding. As you may or not know, Bert and his best friend Sultan have probably covered more miles together than most. They have compet- ed successfully in Endurance Rides but mostly just ride for the pleasure of it. I checked with Bert recently to see what
learning
experience because I watch her help riders resolve issues they have with their riding skills or problems with their horses. Sultan is still handsome and a wonderful friend as ever. He and his pasture buddy Feliciano roam happily on their pasture at the ranch without a care in the world. I ride him at least twice a week”
JEANNE HAR-
FORD has been a busy lady the last few years. She has been with her husband doing Army duty in England and Italy. The England experience turned out to be special because she became attached to the gelding Rocky and as a result, he come to this country where he has been a great show horse helping several riders to cham- pionship ribbons. We hope they are home for good this time. Jeanne has been judging a number of Open Shows in the area and as a result is in demand to do more. She is very popular with Show Managers and the Exhibitors love her. She also has a list of riders that she helps with their riding and show tech- niques. She remarked, “I love teaching and doing the small Open shows have been reward- ing for me. My favorite thing in the world is to help those wanting to learn how to do it themselves. I think our Arabian business is going back to this because of the steep prices for training and showing. Rocky, Sherry Rosser Carroll and I are planning to continue exploring Western Dressage. There will be classes available at the Spin- dletop Arabian Show on May 22nd
and possibly at the Alamo Arabian Fiesta Show on March 20th
. The local dressage shows
have been excellent in adding classes to their shows too! It is a fun and rewarding discipline that many horse/rider teams
can do outside of main ring showing. The schooling for this discipline will add muscle and flexibility to your horse in a gentle manner.
It’s wonderful!
Sherry has also started a group on Facebook if anyone would like more information about Western Dressage in our area. As you know I just judged the Horse Gazette Open Show the week before Christmas. It was a cold wet day with low attendance so I turned it into an opportunity to do a mini clinic, run some practice classes with feedback and then have the judged classes. It was a fun day and I think everyone went home with a smile on their face. I will be judging the Central Texas Arabian show on Feb. 2nd0
at Travis County Fair
Grounds. They always run a great show with good classes and friendly staff. I have also been asked to judge the Star Arabian Club show in Sinton in April 25-26th
. The Star Club is
a small club that has made great efforts over the years to keep their community informed and active. I judged their fall show and thoroughly enjoyed their staff and competitors.”
Keep
up the good work Jeanne. YOGA LESSONS FOR HORSE PEOPLE Is your horse in better
shape than you? We all know the importance of being in good physical condition if we hope to become better riders. Serious riders are always looking for ways to improve their balance, poise and strength. Serious equitation riders often attend ballet classes.
Rick Urban is
well known for his success as a dressage/ trainer and com- petitor.
Rick has started yoga
classes at his house in Boerne and offers classes Monday through Friday.
Jill Ammann
tells us, “ I started going about 6 weeks ago and the Yoga has really improved my posture and my riding seat. I feel great and look forward to going for more lessons.” Rick only accepts donations for the classes (Jill’s class has been giving +/$10 per class) – class lasts about an hour. To learn more go to

of halter, English and Western show horses. They are just a stone’s throw away from the Rose Palace. It makes it very convenient to attend horse events there. They have the Arabians shows – the Lone Star Classic and the Fiesta Shows on their show schedule. JUDY GIBNEY –
COUNTY LINE EQUESTRI- AN CENTER shares their news. “Feb. 1st
, 2014 I will
be offering a step by step col- umn about Western Dressage beginning with what it is and what are it objectives. I will be covering information about the Western Dressage Association of American – rules, tests, how to show. Also how useful if one only wants to trail ride a well educated horse . One of my hopes is that folks understand what It takes to properly care for a horse before they make an emotional purchase. Hopefully this may cut down the number of abandoned and abused horses and perhaps cut down on human injuries as well. One weekend a month County Line will offer Western Dressage info clinics and will also offer versatility practice for those that don’t want to show but learn to safely navigate trail rider surprises.
If anyone wants more info or has questions – email address - Judy at countylineeques@

KATHY STARUST-
KA sends their good news “I am really impressed with our first foal by our stallion MY INDEPENDENDCE DAY. He is out of our Half Arab mare, My Sky High. This young fellow has excellent conformation, very upright with great movement. He is going to make a wonderful Hunter. We plan to haul him to his first show in Feb. along with his with Half Sister My Texas Connection. She is a big filly with lots of trot. She will be started under saddle with Nina Sullivan this year. Nina has her own reason to celebrate in 2014; her QH mare I AINT EVEN is in foal to Indepen- dent Day. We are excited to announce that our imported Brazilian mare, FLAME el JAHOD is in foal to Indepen- dence Day for a July foal. She is an exceptional mare – we are really looking forward to this foal.
