improving impulsion energy, a sense of purpose.

Training without force

By Mary Rose, FBHS © 2014 Impulsion is contained

probably ‘impulsion’ we really mean when we refer to ‘presence’. Without impulsion nothing we do with the horse has much value. In the early stages of training we may work without it, but ultimately it is impulsion that gives life to the performance. The impulsive horse is energetic without being too strong. He is ‘in front of the rider’s seat, but contained by the fingers’. He will have a soft and swinging back with his hindquarters well engaged and will seek to maintain a soft, continuous contact with the rider’s hand through the reins. His mouth will be moist, jaw and poll relaxed, eyes and ears attentive and his movements will be unre- stricted and joyful. It is quite rare to see a truly impulsive horse, but it is unmistakable and well worth working for.

we use in training will help us to develop impulsion. Last month we discussed the importance of riding the corners of the arena correctly and consciously and this will help develop impulsion. Another important exercise is the turn on the haunches. This turn is usually performed as a half-turn (180 de- grees) from the walk. When you first introduce your horse to this turn ask only a step or two, at most a 90 degree, or quarter turn. During the turn the

horse must walk his forehand around his haunches, while re- maining on one spot and with his hind feet stepping up and down rather than pivoting. The hind feet should, in fact, maintain the exact rhythm of the walk and in the early stages we allow them to move forward just a few inches on a very small circle. In a dressage test we expect the hind feet to move from the spot less than 12 inches and preferably less than 6 inches. Start by asking for a

turning your hips slightly in the direction of the turn. The result you want if, for example, you are turning away from the wall to your left, is that your horse starts the turn by placing his right hind leg across in front of the left hind and then immediately follows with his shoulders and front feet. Ask only a step or two, at most a 90 degree turn, at first and try to avoid using the reins at all. If you use the inside rein (in this case the left) to bring the shoulders around, you will tend to push the haunches out to the right and will make a turn on the center. Often a little pressure with your outside thigh (in this case your right thigh) will help and most horses learn to respond to this aid very quickly. A little outside rein may be needed to prevent the horse walking too much forward but too much will prevent the horse from turning. The turn around the

haunches really shifts the horse’s weight back and helps him un- derstand engagement and there- fore impulsion and ultimately collection.
