Leisure centre parking limits

PARKING controls are to be estab- lished at Maidstone Leisure Centre. Maidstone Leisure Trust is intro-

ducing an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system to prevent commuters parking all day, free of charge. From the end of February ve- hicles parked for more than three hourswill be fined £75. Sixth formers at Maidstone Grammar School will be given permits to leave their cars at the centre all day.Users of the leisure cen- tre and the bowls club will be able to register their cars and park free over and above that period. Jon Hymus, partnership manager

for the trust, said the measure would mean more parking for leisure centre users. He added it would control po- tential “vehicular anti-social behav- iour”, improve car park security with theANPR system monitoring and in- troduce controls to deal with abuses of disabled parking and school bus bays.

Race on to find cash to repair ancient church

FRIENDS and supporters of the historic church in Ulcombe are frantically raising funds to carry out work on the ancient building.

A routine inspection found the medieval church, situated outside the village on Ulcombe Hill, was in need of major urgent repairs. Sections of the roof need to be re-

placed and internal repairs are needed to the fabric of the building which has sufferedwater damage. Repairs are estimated at £80,000

and parishioners would like to see the church kitchen and toilets im- proved at the same time. English Heritage has pledged £40,000 towards the restoration work, while local charities have of- fered a further £22,500. The Friends of All Saints’ Church have organised a programme of

fund-raising events, including an auction of promises, which has so far raised more than £5,000. All Saints’ Church dates back to

the 12th century and is a grade I listed building. It underwent major restoration in the 1980s. The church- yard contains ancient yewtrees, one of which is over 2,000 years old.

Inner Wheel marks 70th birthday

THE Inner Wheel Club ofMaidstone, formed through Rotary to help with the war effort at Maidstone East station, has celebrated its 70th birthday. More than 100 ladies attended a district lunch,

and president Elizabeth Hext made the birthday cake, which she cut with district chairman Judith Cooper. The pair are pictured. Speaker John Pearce and his wife dressed in war-

time uniforms and talked about and played Glenn Miller music. Members work hard to raise funds for charity –

more than 100 have been helped – and there is now a road named after the club in Sri Lanka.
