Care home may expand
A NEW care home for mentally in- firm elderly people near Yalding may be expanded. In December 2009, Maidstone Council granted planning permission for a 40-bed facility in Kenward Or- chard, Kenward Road, to replace an existing home to provide accommo- dation for sufferers of dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and similar conditions. Aplanning application, which will
be determined by MaidstoneCouncil, has now been submitted to increase the number of bedrooms to 62. The development, which is located oppo- site the Kenward Trust drug and al- cohol residential rehabilitation unit, is currently under construction. A supporting statement on behalf
of Able Care Group said: “The pro- posed additional 22 rooms will fur- ther help with the release of more bed space in local hospitals, providing a purpose-built facility to provide the required specialist care in a safe envi- ronment. “This type of accommodation pro-
vides greater flexibility in the delivery of care and enhances the ability of the health service to meet its care re- quirements. Meals will be prepared on site and also an on-site laundry is provided.”

Councillor withdraws plan for garden homes
A PLANNING application by the vice-chairman of Langley Parish Council was withdrawn after criti- cism from the local community. Cllr Jackie Cassin’s proposal to
build six homes on gardens at Ye Olde Cottage, Green Lane, provoked an objection from parish councillors. Ms Cassin (pictured)was absent for
the parish council’s planning commit- tee hearing, which attracted about 25 mostly unhappy members of the pub- lic.
However, as Downs Mail went to
press she withdrew the proposal, cit- ing “personal reasons”. Concerns were raised in the meeting about likely increases in traffic, unsuitable access and the setting of a precedent that could see further new develop- ments in the local area. Therewas also a feeling that the classification of the land as garden was incorrect. “It is not a garden, it’s agricultural,” said one resident. Les Teague, one of Cllr Cassin’s neighbours, told themeeting: “We re- spect you councillors for what you do for our village, but you have to re- spect us back. Jackie Cassin does not
respect any of us in here and has to stand down. We don’t think she should be on the council.” The parish council chairman, Cheryl Taylor-Maggio, told the audience that members could only debate Cllr Cassin’s position on the council if there was a groundswell of feeling from the public. As we went to press the council had not received any emails calling for her to resign. Prior to the withdrawal, Cllr Cassin
said: “My house is in the centre of this. On one side of my home there

the community: We run businesses like anyone else and put in planning applications like anybody else. I am just doing what anybody in the com- munity could do. “I have not stepped out of line at
