Front Street Shipyard in Belfast is be- ginning construction on high-performance multihulls for Trefoil Marine. The T30 is a catamaran designed by Donald L. Blount and Associates (DLBA) of Chesapeake, VA, which will be used primarily for military and police patrol, fi re and rescue. The craft’s capabilities are applicable to the commercial and recreational markets as well. Construc- tion on the fi rst vessels begins immediately at Front Street Shipyard. The T30 design provides superior sta-

bility, predictable handling and a smooth ride. The corrosion-free, infused compos- ite construction vessels combine shallow draft with minimal wake. The vessel can be beached or stored without the need for a cradle. Power options include outboard, inboard diesel with drives, or jet. The T30 is designed for river and shallow water op- erations as much as heavy sea states. “We’ve been working closely with

Trefoil Marine as they’ve honed the design with DLBA and introduced it to prospec- tive clients,” said JB Turner, president of Front Street Shipyard. “That relationship has allowed us to carefully plan an effi cient building process for this series of Patrol Cats now that there are contracts in place.” Front Street Shipyard will take deliv- ery of the cats’ CNC-machined plugs from DLBA Robotics of Hampton, VA, in early January, at which time the yard’s composites team will begin constructing moulds for the Patrol Cat 30s. The hull and deck will be built of fi berglass with a foam collar around the sides and bow. The fi rst of the boats will launch in early summer 2014. “Trefoil Marine is pleased to be work- ing in collaboration with the team at Front Street Shipyard,” said Trefoil Marine Pres- ident Jim Mattingly. “Utilizing their new state-of-the-art facility, we can draw upon their leading technical talent, experience and knowledge of modern composite construc- tion. Their willingness to work with Trefoil Marine and our designers, DLBA, over the past two years assures us that the boats will be manufactured to the highest standard.” The T30 will be joining the Trefoil line that includes the T28 and T29. The T28 is a trailerable high-speed intercept vessel, and the T29 is a wide-body confi guration that

Atlantic Boat in Brooklin is focusing on storage and repair, however, customer who come by for a new boat, they are more than willing to build them one. Presently they are laying up a Duffy 42, which will be extended to a 46 footer, for a customer from Vinalhaven. This is a replacement boat for the one that was lost in the fi re at Clark Island Boat Works in St. George last fall. They are also going to build a Duffy 37 for Clark Island to fi nish off. A Duffy 31, which is being fi nished out

as a sport fi shing boat for a customer from southern New England, will be completed this spring. She is powered with a 315 hp Yanmar diesel.

In the repair shop is a BHM 36, built about seven years ago, which hit a rock last summer. The boat was trucked to the yard and is now being taken apart so the repairs can be made. She hit was pretty hard, how- ever the damage was not so extensive as to cause an emergency. The boat was leaking slightly but was able to make port without assistance. She was hauled the following day. Most of the damage is on the aft end of the skeg, which is an area where Atlantic

Boat adds plenty of material just in case of grounding like this happens. The propeller and shaft are fi ne, however the rudder is bent. Over the last several years Atlantic Boat has been selling a number of launches to yacht clubs and marinas. One of these returned this fall for annual maintenance and she should be shipped home after the fi rst of the year.

As for storage customers, there is a Hinckley 59 sailboat in for annual main- tenance and a bow thruster. A Hinckley 51 sailboat, which had a signifi cant amount of work done last year, is back for some cos- metic work. A Hinckley Bermuda 40 is in for a number of small projects, varnish and

a new engine, a Westerbeke 55D. Next to the Bermuda 40 are another two Hinckley’s in for just annual maintenance. A Sabre 28 is in to have her engine

replaced. They are going change her West- erbeke to a Beta 12-hp diesel. They are also going to upgrade her charging system and increase her battery capacity. A 26 foot Webber’s Cove is in to have her roof raised, cabin sides added, and a teak deck.

Atlantic Boat is now storing more than 60 boats, and most of these are in the larger size range and this is keeping them very busy.
