Maine Yacht Center in Portland has a very interesting project underway. They are making modifi cations to an Open 60, which was recently purchased by Rich Wilson. The Open 60 design was developed for the second BOC, a singlehanded race round the world, in 1986. They are designed to be light, very quick downwind in the Southern Ocean, but also able to withstand the worst that mother-nature can hand out. In 1998 canting keels were allowed and computeri- zation has continued to get better and better. The class is also governed with stringent safety rules and this has created a relatively safe racing machine. Wilson plans to compete in the next
Vendee Globe in 2016. This boat was de- signed by Owen Clarke Design of England and built by Southern Ocean Marine in Tau-
ranga, New Zealand. She competed in the 2008 Vendee Globe and suffered a keel issue and did not fi nish. In the 2012 Vendee Globe she was skippered by Dominique Wavre to a seventh place fi nish with a time of 90 days 3 hours 14 minutes and 42 seconds. The main structure of the boat will not be altered. However they have removed the nav-station along with all the wiring and electronics and are making some minor alterations on the interior. They are now building a new nav-station and seat which will be much more comfortable than the previous one was.
These are very interesting race boats and have evolved incredibly over the last two decades. You climb down below in this boat and the ballast tanks are underneath the sole. In years past the ballast tanks were

on the sides to level out the boat better, but now with the canting keels you do not need the weight in the sides because the boat is already fl at. Brian Harris, who manages the Maine Yacht Center, said these are pure rac- ing machine, extremely powerful and more than a handful for just one person. Another interesting facet of this boat is the evolution of solar and hydro power. These boats used to carry almost 2,000 gal- lons of diesel fuel for the generator, now they carry 50 gallons. It is all because of the hydro generators, which look like small outdrives on the stern of the boat. One problem they have discovered is that they easily break,

but this is solved by raising them out of the water when not in use.
If the open 60s are too much for you, how about an open 40? In the shop there are four of them, two for storage and annual maintenance. One of the others has had her bow removed and modifi ed for an articulat- ing bowsprit. The fourth Open 40 is a new construction, which should be fi nished this season.
Maine Yacht Center is full of storage boats and there is plenty of other work around the yard, and most of this is routine maintenance.
Paul Luke, Inc. in East Boothbay com- pleted their new storage shed this fall and they fi lled it quickly. This building will also allow them to work inside on the 12 storage boats inside.
Most of the work this year is all annual maintenance, but they do have a couple customers thinking about doing additional work.
They are just fi nishing up a multiyear project on KARINA III and this year they’re doing her interior detail work.
They are also doing an engine rebuild on a S&S Pilot. She is on the market and if she is sold she will have additional work
