DuSable Museum


on Sundays; the DuSable is closed on Mondays. Or, visit the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. This museum’s permanent collection is comprised of over 7,000 photographs, textiles, paintings, sculptures and other items representing Mayan, Mezcala, Michoacan, Teotihuacan, Remojadas and Toltec cultures, along with art from Western Mexico. The NMMA is closed on Mondays, but admission is always free. Go north on Michigan Ave. to where


the Art Institute of Chicago presides in monumental glory. “Art and Appetite: American Painting, Culture, and Cuisine” runs through 1/27 and “When the Greeks Ruled Egypt” is available through 7/27. Artemisia Gentileschi’s “Judith Slaying Holofernes” is on display through 1/9. Look out later in the year for “Magritte: The Mystery of the Ordinary, 1926-1938,” from 6/22-10/12. Other current exhibits include “Amar Kanwar: The Lightning Testimonies,” through 4/20, “Christopher Williams: The Production Line of Happiness,” which goes from 1/25-5/18, “Christopher Wool,” from 2/23-5/11, and “Nilima Sheikh: Each Night Put Kashmir in Your dreams,” from 3/8-5/18. If your art tastes run to a more modern


bent, venture north along the Mag Mile to the Museum of Contemporary Art. Current exhibits include “The Way of the Shovel: Art as Archaeology” through 3/9, “CITY SELF” through 4/13, “BMO Harris Bank Chicago Works: Lilli Carré,” through 4/15, “MCA DNA: Warhol and Marisol” through 6/15 and “MCA DNA: Alexander Calder,” through 8/17. From 1/25- 5/18, a show of William J. O’Brien’s work will be available, and “Isa Genzken: Retrospective” runs 4/12-8/3. Check the schedule for performances and programs throughout the year. on Mondays and offers free admission all day every Tuesday. Next, take a trip up to the neighborhood of Lincoln Park. Explore the City’s rich past at the Chicago History Museum, where the last days of “Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair,” Vivian Maier’s Chicago” take place and a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation is on hand until 1/5. “Siam: The Queen and the White City” remains through 3/2. Illinois Resident Discount Days are 1/20, 2/16, 2/17, and 3/4. Explore the world around us at The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, across from Lincoln Park Zoo. “Animal Secrets” runs until 1/20, and the Judy Istock Butterfly Haven lets you enjoy 1,000 butterflies year-round. The museum is free on Thursdays. We’ve included some of the museum’s most popular museum destinations, but you’ll find dozens of other institutions in the city if you look. These include community museums such as the Chinese-American Museum of Chicago and the National Hellenic Museum, plus The Oriental Institute Museum, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House, the Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier, the Museum of Broadcast Communications, and many more!
