Arabian news & more from around the state by Ginny Nokes of Seguin, TX.
YEAR!!! I get sentimental and recall all the wonderful memo- ries about people that have come into my life. I have been so blessed and thank the good Lord for many friends and acquain- tances that have been a part of my life with Horses. Starting with Saddlebreds that I adored. Later I found Arabian horses and that became an addiction! Once I was introduced to the Arabian horse, they became the “forever” horse for me. To clar- ify that comment I love all hors- es. God put them on this earth for we people that were meant to have them a part of their lives. But for me - I was hooked from the beginning. I never owned an Arabian horse – they owned me. I will always miss the people that have gone on ahead of me. Walter Chapman, Diane Neely, Ken Courtright, Laverne Clark, Bob Blanchard, Peggy Whittington, The Donoghues, Norbert Krebsbach, Gordon Wallace
People I have known forever. Betty Hale (before AAHA) Russ Taylor (he was in High School) The Burke Family (Mathew was a kid) Francine Dismukes, Judy Connelly, Kathy Apelt, Ann Lang. Jeanene Pegg Hundley, Art and Joy Snell, Lee Allen, Claire Larsen, Greg Dial, Pat Mitcham, May Finch, Rita Pearson, Barb and Ron Mar- tins, Bill and Rose Marie Eash, Linda Cornelius, Grant Gal- loway, Joan Blanchard, Lisa Eberhardt , Shirley Gallaher, Vicki Krebsbach, Liz Salmon to name a few.

went back to a time when the Arabian breed was still in its infancy and showing was such fun. The kids that were a part of Arabian shows; Frannie Cuello, Dana Rodgers, Russ Taylor, Greg Nokes, Edythe Snowden, Karlan Downing, Barbara Larsen, Lisa and De- nise Blanchard, Misty Neely, Katy Whittington, Julie Velas- co, and there were more. They are no longer “kids” but most are still involved with Arabians. And people are still devoting their time and efforts to Ara- bian shows and events. While attendance has been down in rated shows, the Open shows continue to grow and are an im- portant part of the Arabian horse picture. People that volunteer their time in present day Open Shows are;
popularity and will be moving to the new show facility near Dripping Springs next year. Of Arabian origins…Kathy Starustka and Marilyn Hazen put on The Horse Gazette Open All Breed Show. This show actually started years ago as the Duende Farm show put on by Jackie Green, Anita and Lori Savage took the show reins from Jackie for AAHA, then passed them on to Kathy Starustka and Marilyn Hazen who put on AAHA shows, and now The Horse Gazette Open Shows at the Diamond F Arena, just outside of Seguin, the next show being December 21!

us since she was in Grade School. She finished High School in Seguin and college in San Marcos. She won nu- merous awards showing client horses, our horses and her mare Mi Pretty Lady. Law Enforce- ment runs in her family and her next move was to become a member of the Highway Patrol. She will graduate De- cember 20th from the Highway Patrol Academy in Austin and become a full-fledged member of the Texas Highway Patrol system. If you are traveling in or around San Angelo – beware Jessica begins her career in Bronte, Texas near there. The Academy has been a tough six months. They get up at 4:00 am every morning and spend all day training. It involves lots of driv- ing training, firearms training, legal classes, combat training and extensive physical training. Jessica has been so busy it has been almost impossible to find time for horses.
when she can to get a “horse fix”. We have missed her and the horses have missed all the grooming. Now that Academy is over – she plans to get back with horses. We received an email from her recently and she shared this experience. “I just wanted you to know that I passed my big fight today! I was

really nervous before, but then got to thinking right before I went in, if I can handle a horse, I can handle a person. We had to fight three guys off with our baton first. One of the guys kept kicking me as hard as he could, and I remember thinking to myself, if this was a horse kicking at me like this I’d beat his behind, so that’s what I did, the next two guys jumped on me and I had to fight my way out from underneath them to get to my gun. Even with all the tactics they have taught us, I remember with horses if you shake their head with the lead rope when they do something wrong they will quit. So I grabbed both the guy’s head masks and shook them until I got my gun out! Who knew horses could teach you about tactical fighting!”

her terms, sometimes on mine, and always, I was reminded of her body language. I gave her to Lauron Fischer, young daughter of Jon and Laura Fischer of Tuleta in November 2002 to be pasture com- pany for a Quarter Horse mare sold to them by Val and Gary Hackney, a Christmas present for Lauron. Both became Lauron’s mounts and challenge. Ruala died on Novem- ber after eleven years of contented life on the R.W Dirks Ranch. The Vets diagnosis – probably, a heart attack, and a very sad surprise since at twenty-four and a half, we all believed she had several more years of life. I stayed in close touch with her over the years and will visit her gravesite on the ranch soon. The Rualla were a Bedouin tribe of the North African desert. Carl Raswan wrote about them and the friendship he developed with them when he lived among them a hundred years ago. RUALA was a unique and, at times a challenging personality.
it difficult to end the life of her dear brood mare Khassie. She was born in 1987 and was 27 years old when she departed this world for a heavenly pasture. Now free of the pain and suf- fering. Khassie was a special mare and gave Val three foals. BJ, Bayhia and H/A Rebel. Val sent me a colored photo of a beautiful colored sky that ap- peared just before Khassie left this world. Val said “I loved her very much and will miss her. Thank you Darlene Stockton for letting me have her.
YOU ALL A MERRY CHRIST- MAS AND A WONDERFUL NEW YEAR. May the coming year be the best ever filled with great rides and lots of blues. Embrace your friends and give thanks for all the blessings com- ing your way.
Ginny HERE’S WISHING
Val Hackney found
a beautiful black grandson of Ibn El Nefous, owned and syn- dicated by Jarrell McCracken of Bentwood Farms near Waco during the 70”s. Her dam was owned by a fine friend and was probably Quarter Horse and maybe a little Thoroughbred. She was rather homely and or- nery, however a beautiful buck- skin color with black legs, mane and tail. I witnessed Ruala’s birth in May 1989 and enjoyed watching her grow and respond- ing to early ground training. On her third birthday, I took her to Ginny Nokes in Seguin for breaking and training. (She was born broke.
