endurance Texans take aerc champions It came down to the

last race of the 2013 season to determine the winner be- tween two Texas friends, both of whom rode black geldings: Vicky Rogers on Coin’s Di- amond Nugget, a Missouri Foxtrotter and Michele Petty on Kadmon, an Arabian. The two often rode in the same races against each other, and when traveling out of state camped together whenever possible. In unofficial results, the Texas women have won the National AERC (American Endurance Rider’s Conference) Limited Distance (LD) Mileage Champi- onship and Reserve Champion- ship shattering all prior records. Limited Distance (LD) races are from 25 to 35 miles long, and the most LD miles previously accumulated in one year by the same horse and rider was 1010. The season ended

with Rogers & Nugget of Hous- ton logging 1230 race miles in 43 starts with no pulls, and Petty & Kadmon of San An- tonio tallying 1200 miles with 46 starts and 44 completions. Both teams travelled to Utah, Arizona and New Mexico riding at spectacular venues including the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and the Butch Cassidy outlaw trails. Petty ended up riding in 10 different states and driving through an additional 13 states. Rogers & Nugget picked up 210 race miles at the Ft. Stanton New Mexico pioneer ride and won the coveted Overall Best Condition award, while Petty gave Kadmon 3 months off in the summer to rest a suspected strained suspensory ligament.

Michele Petty and Kadmon

Reserve Limited Endurance Champions

Petty & Kadmon

raced in 4 time zones from Flor- ida to California to try to make up for sitting out the summer. From October 24 through De- cember 1, they raced each week sometimes with 3 back to back races earning up to 80 miles in one week. Team Petty & Kadmon rode in Moab, UT near Arches National Park through areas where the recent Lone Ranger movie was filmed; then they traveled to Iowa and rode through cornfields surrounded by stunning fall foliage. Next they rode by historic Civil War battlefields, through the cotton fields, swamps and forests of Broxton Bridge Plantation, South Carolina. The follow- ing weekend they camped in the Blackriver State Forest in Florida where they had a joyous mini reunion with some fellow Texans and completed both days of racing. The only race in the country the following week

was in Kentucky at the historic Shaker Village just outside of Lexington. Kadmon got a taste of bluegrass after he completed his race which brought him to 1140 race miles.

The only hope of

catching Rogers & Nugget was to drive 4 days across country in 23 degree weather for a 3 day race series the final weekend of the season in Wheatland, California. Petty rode Kad- mon conservatively and easily completed the first day. On the second day, they were nearly hit by a horse that reared up and flipped over backwards and landed right where they had been standing during the vet hold. Petty will never forget looking up and seeing an upside down horse flying through the air over top of her and hurling herself out of the landing zone, and get Kadmon beyond harm’s way as well.

Determined to be ex-

tra cautious, after their narrow escape, Petty held Kadmon to a walk on the final two miles. Kad- mon was utterly bored with the pace and became distracted by jet skiers on the lake next to the trail. Not watching his footing, Kadmon tripped and stumbled hard over a large rock in the trail, straining his right front leg. He managed to pass his vet check, but was noted for having taken two off steps at the take-off and return of his otherwise sound trot-out. Kadmon started the final day seemingly sound, but was pulled after 18 miles at the lunch vet check. Had Petty & Kadmon been able to complete the final race there would have been an unprecedented tie at 1230 miles for both teams. Congratulations to

both Texas Teams for enduring an amazing season and winning the National Champion and Reserve LD Endurance Cham- pionships.
