Excellence Achieved
Shippers recognize Arkansas Best’s Judy McReynolds and Roy Slagle for transforming the venerable LTL carrier
By John D. Schulz Contributing Writer
The pathway to achievement is
rarely identical for leaders of even the same company. Take the cases of Judy McReynolds and Roy Slagle, who recent- ly were bestowed the highest award by the National Industrial Transportation League, or “NIT League.” A century-old organization found-
ed as the “voice of the shipper,” the NIT League recently branched out to embrace transportation providers as a major component of its organization, and has honored the Arkansas duo with its McCullough Award as transportation executives of the year. In selecting the pair, the NIT
League acknowledged a combined 45 ARKANSAS TRUCKING REPORT | Issue 5 2013
years of leadership within Arkansas Best and ABF Freight System, its largest oper- ating unit. “The McCullough Award is about
leadership and I think that’s what really galvanized the thinking of our board members on the vote,” said Bruce Carlton, president and CEO of the NIT League. “I don’t vote, but there was a strong preference for Judy and Roy.” McReynolds, 51, is chairman of
the board of ABF Freight System and president and CEO of its parent com- pany, Arkansas Best Corp. Slagle, 60, is president and CEO of ABF, the nation’s sixth-largest LTL carrier. McReynolds arrived at Arkansas
Best Corp. after a career in the financial and accounting worlds. Slagle, a long- time member of the board of directors
of the Arkansas Trucking Association, is a career ABF man who is well respected as an executive with a thorough under- standing of the industry and its issues. McReynolds is known for her
financial acumen. She honed her knowledge of finance at Ernst & Young, one of the nation’s Big Four account- ing firms. Ernst & Young had Arkansas Best as a client. From there, she joined Arkansas Best nine years ago. “When I was at Ernst & Young, we
had a number of clients in the trucking business. Arkansas Best was one of my clients. This company was run very pro- fessionally, much like when I was in the public accounting world,” McReynolds recalled.
