The relationship she de-
veloped with Belgrave has taken her around the world, and instilled in her a desire to give back to the community that helped her development, including mentoring young jazz artists at DPS. Indeed, as Greene states in relation to the power of reading in young lives, “Not only may there be a pull toward new relationships, toward community, but such readers may be moved also to new modes of self-definition, new beginnings arising from an emerging awareness of both difference and possi- bility.”3
I apply this idea to young jazz
musicians in Detroit, who have found new ways to define themselves through music and music mentoring partner- ships.
In a city defined by blight, poverty and violence,
philanthropists, profession-
als, school administrators and students have joined to create a musical com- munity that provides not only hope, but also a sense of pride and agency. The partnership between the Detroit Jazz Festival and the Detroit Public Schools has succeeded in allowing DPS stu- dents to imagine a new and better fu- ture for themselves and their commu- nity.

Her dissertation research is a qualitative study of the interactions between urban educational systems and the school learning experiences of middle school choral students. Hall leads Taslimah’s Ragtime Band, an en- semble dedicated to performing and preserving the music of early 20th cen- tury African-American composers and their music.
